Hanging wallpaper is a popular way to decorate a home.Hanging wallpaper on the ceiling is growing more and more popular. If you want to create a unique look, you can wallpaper the ceiling to match the wallpaper on your walls.Apply paste to the back of your wallpaper and smooth it onto the ceiling with a plastic tool. You can wallpaper your ceiling with help from a friend.
Step 1: Dust covers or plastic drop cloths can be used to cover the floor.
If you want to protect your floors from dust, debris, or paste, stretch a plastic covering across the floor. When you are done, there will be less clean up.If you have a large light fixture, you can wrap it in a plastic covering.
Step 2: Sand any rough areas of the ceiling after removing flaky paint.
Use a ladder to get to the ceiling. You can get rid of flaky paint remnants by gliding a paint scraper across the ceiling. To smooth the surface, use 80 to 120-grit sandpaper. This depends on your ceiling. If the ceiling is clean and smooth, you can apply the wallpaper.
Step 3: Measure your ceiling to figure out how much wallpaper you need.
Measure the length and width of your room with a measuring tape.Add 1 in to account for the edges when you measure to the nearest inch or centimeter.Purchase wallpaper large enough to cover the area. You can buy wallpaper on a roll.11 yd (10 m) is the length of the rolls.
Step 4: The wallpaper should be cut to the size of the ceiling.
Measure your tape to see how many pieces you need to cut.Use a pair of scissors to cut your wallpaper. If your measurements are not perfect, always round up rather than round down.If your wallpaper is too short, you can trim off any extra.
Step 5: The mix-it-yourself wallpaper paste instructions can be found here.
Use wallpaper paste on your ceiling to hold it in.Purchase mix-it-yourself paste from a store. You should read through the directions thoroughly to make sure you apply your mix correctly.
Step 6: The instructions state to mix the paste in a bucket.
In general, mix it with water following the outlined ratios. To blend the powder and water into a paste, use a paint mixer.Continue mixing until it is smooth. It will take several minutes to mix up the paste.
Step 7: You can apply wallpaper with paste by setting up a table.
Put your pieces of wallpaper on top of a folding table in the middle of the room.Put the paste into the paint tray.
Step 8: The paste should be applied from the middle to the sides.
You can paint the paste onto the wallpaper with a brush or roller.Make sure your wallpaper sticks securely by using a generous coat of paste.Starting from the middle helps spread the paste across the paper, so it doesn't get concentrated in the center.
Step 9: Bring the sides together by moving the sheet closer to the ceiling.
If you want to transport your wallpaper to the ceiling, it is best to face both sides of the paste together.A friend can hold the other side of the wallpaper to do this.Slowly move the sheet to the center. When you do this, make sure the paste is facing upwards. If you have a long strip of wallpaper, you can use alternate folds to fit the whole strip.
Step 10: Start at the widest part of the ceiling.
It's easier to hang the wallpaper. The first wallpaper sheet should be placed in the center of the ceiling. If your room starts to change in size, you should cover the widest part.To get to the ceiling, use a ladder. This is not required.
Step 11: The edge of the wallpaper is where your ceiling meets the wall.
Line up the wallpaper to the edge of the ceiling by making sure it is paste-side up.To smooth over the center, use your hand.If you want to smooth the wallpaper into place, you can use a plastic applicator.
Step 12: If you hang the wallpaper around the fixture, make a cut in it.
You should stop before you reach a light fixture if you want to secure the wallpaper to the ceiling. To cut around the fixture, use your scissors. If you cut in a circle, you can make small snips vertically in the circle every 2 in, then cut them all off with a horizontal snip.Continue to smooth the rest of the wallpaper. When cutting around a fixture, be careful. You don't want to hurt yourself.
Step 13: Rub the plastic over the wallpaper.
This helps to hold it in place. After the majority of the wallpaper is in place, use a plastic squeegee-like tool to smooth over the sides.Start in the center and finish over each side.As you do this, make sure there are no bubbles or even spots. You can smooth the wallpaper with your hands.
Step 14: Use scissors to trim the edges.
If you hang each piece of wallpaper with care, it will not peel off by its own weight. If you want to trim off extra paper from the sides, go around the edges of each sheet.Make your cuts as close to the wall as you can with a pair of scissors.
Step 15: Continue until the ceiling is covered.
The next piece of wallpaper should be hung immediately after you put the first one in place. Before you apply your wallpaper, make sure you match the pattern of each piece. It is okay if each piece overlaps slightly if your wallpaper is plain. To hang the next piece, cover the wallpaper with paste and secure it to the ceiling with a plastic applicator.Apply more paste if the wallpaper is loose.
Step 16: You can use a seam roller to go over the wallpaper.
This will make sure it sticks.A small plastic rolling device called a seam roller is great for rolling fine lines of wallpaper. After all of your wallpaper is in place, use a seam roller to smooth over each intersection of wallpaper sheets. The edges don't peel off as the paper dries. You can use a paint roller to smooth over the wallpaper on the ceiling.Make sure you get all of the edges when you start in the middle.
