You can show off your individualism with pins.It is difficult to find that perfect pin.It is easy to make a pin with a few supplies and a flat backed safety pin.You can make all sorts of pins once you know how to make them.
Step 1: You can find a square-shaped image.
Aim for something that is about 2 inches by 1 inch.If the image needs to be enlarged, use an image editing program.
Step 2: Leave a 12 inch (1.27 centimeters) border around the image, but cut it out.
Wrap the back of your pin with this excess material.
Step 3: Attach the piece of colored paper and thin cardboard to your image.
The base for your pin will be made from cardboard. The back of the paper will be colored.Solid colored paper can have an interesting pattern.
Step 4: Place glue on the back of the image.
The back is facing you if you turn the image over.Attach it to it with a thin layer of glue. You can use a glue stick. You might want to use a paintbrush to apply school glue.
Step 5: The cardboard should be put on the back of the picture.
The cardboard should be centered as much as possible. You should have a border around the cardboard.
Step 6: Wrap the image around the cardboard.
The first corners are where you should start.Attach them to the back of the cardboard and fold them over. This will allow you to fold some of the seams.
Step 7: Glue the colored paper onto the cardboard and let it dry.
Press the paper onto the back of the cardboard. You can use a glue stick. You might want to use a paintbrush to apply school glue.
Step 8: Paint over a pin.
Glossy will look the best, but you can use any finish you want.Let it dry before painting the front and back. This will protect your pin.You may need to apply 3 to 4 layers if you are using a decoupage glue.Let the layers dry before applying the next one. There are brush-on and spray on forms of the acrylates.
Step 9: The safety pin needs to be glue on.
A line of hot glue should be drawn across the back of the pin.Press the back of the pin into the glue.
Step 10: Something small, light, and with a flat back is what you should find.
The item should be small.Flat items are best, but you can use a slightly raised item. There are some items that make great pins.
Step 11: Rub alcohol on the back of the item.
Run rubbing alcohol across the back of the cotton ball or tissue you soaked. The glue might not stick properly if there are oils or dirt in the glue.
Step 12: You can find a safety pin that is a bit narrower than your item.
You shouldn't see the safety pin sticking out when you put it behind the object.
Step 13: Attach the back of the pin to the glue line.
You can use hot glue, but it won't work as well as super glue.
Step 14: The back of the safety pin needs to be pressed into the glue.
The back of the object is facing you.Press the safety pin on the back.Make it as centered as possible by aligning it horizontally.
Step 15: Before using the glue, let it set.
This will take a few minutes if you are using hot glue.It may take several hours if you are using super glue.
Step 16: There is a small, easily-traceable image that you like.
Something is about 3 inches. The image will shrink to 1/3 of its original size by the time you are done, but you can use any sort of image you like.If the image is on your computer, you will need to print it out.You can change the size of the image using a program.
Step 17: If you want to paint the shrink film, consider sanding it.
You can lightly buff the surface of the shrink film. The paint stick will be improved by this. It's not necessary for colored pencils.
Step 18: Place the shrink film on top of the image and trace it with a permanent marker.
Go over the lines as smoothly as possible. You can tape shrink plastic to the table if it moves too much.Number 6 plastic can be used if you can't find shrink film.It can be found on take-out containers. There is a recycling symbol on the container. It should have a number inside. You can use it if it is a 6.
Step 19: Do you want your design to be colored?
Try to stay within the lines as much as possible. You will be re-lining the piece if you go over the lines. If you are using acrylic paints, be sure to thin them down first with some water. It will give you a better finish. It will prevent the paint from clumping up.
Step 20: Go over the outlines with a marker.
If you colored your design using markers or paint, you have to wait for it to dry.
Step 21: The shapes should be removed.
A pair of scissors or a craft knife can be used.Don't leave any white edges if you cut right along the outline.
Step 22: The instructions on the package tell you to bake the shapes on a baking sheet.
If you don't have any instructions, bake the shapes in a pre-heated oven until the pieces are flat.It can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 35 minutes.Don't worry if the pieces start to warp while baking. They will flatten out eventually.Number 6 plastic can be baked at 350F (178.6C) for about 312 minutes.
Step 23: The pieces should be taken out of the oven and cooled down.
You can bend them if you want to give them an interesting shape.
Step 24: You can seal the colored designs.
You can use spray-on or brush on.You can use a few layers of decoupage glue to paint.Allow each layer to dry before adding the next one.It will give your pin a nice finish. It will keep your art work from chipping.
Step 25: Attach a safety pin to the back of the shape.
The safety pin has a line of hot glue on it.Press the safety pin onto the back when flipping the shape. It's best to center it as much as possible.
