Step 1: Place the paper on the surface.

Place a sheet of paper on a surface that can be cleaned from oil.If oil spills on this surface, make sure it isn't damaged.

Step 2: The oil should be manufacturer-approved.

Purchase the recommended oil for your shredder.Different shredders use different oils and will usually sell the oil where you bought it.Canola oil is a substitute for oil if you are using an old and/or out of warranty paper shredder.Canola oil can be used instead of the oil produced by some brands to save money.

Step 3: The oil must be applied to the paper in a zigzag pattern.

The oil should be spread over the paper in a zigzag pattern. It can get a little messy if you put too much oil or saturate the paper.Make sure the zigzags stretch from side to side.

Step 4: Put the paper shredder on and shred it.

The paper should be shredded through the machine. The oil will coat the blades when the paper is shredded. This keeps the shredder running. If paper is creased or damaged, it may cause a malfunction in the machine.

Step 5: Excess oil can be absorbed by adding a few more papers to the shredder.
