A malfunctioning tub faucet can make it hard to take a bath.It is a cheap and easy project to replace your tub spout. There is a screw on the underside of the slip-on faucet that needs to be removed before you can remove it.The screw-on faucets are able to be removed from the wall.Installation of a new faucet is easy if you remove your old one.You can replace your tub faucet if you take the correct steps.
Step 1: The screw can be found on the underside of the faucet.
The tub wall has a set screw under the spout. The water supply pipe is secured with a set screw.Look at the underside of the faucet for a screw hole. You probably have a screw-on faucet if there is no screw under it.The screw is usually close to the ground. You can use a flashlight to find the screw.
Step 2: The caulk can be removed with a knife.
caulk between your faucet and wall is meant to seal cracks.Remove the caulk with a knife.Continue until you remove all the caulk.A razor blade is an alternative to a knife. You can skip this step if there is no caulk on the faucet.
Step 3: An Allen wrench can be used to remove the screw.
The set screw is under the faucet.Turn the wrench clockwise to loosen the screw.Set the screw aside.
Step 4: Pull the faucet away from the wall
Pull the faucet from the wall with both hands. If the faucet feels stuck, you can loosen it by rotating it.If you bend the faucet side to side, you may damage the pipe inside. The water supply pipe is usually made of copper and should be visible after you remove the faucet.
Step 5: The caulk around the faucet should be removed.
Lift up as much caulk as you can by using a putty knife or razor blade.Continue to remove caulk from the wall and faucet until there is no caulk left. You can skip this step if your faucet doesn't have caulk.
Step 6: The spout needs to be turned clockwise.
Turn the faucet clockwise by grabbing it with both hands. The faucet can be loosened and removed from the wall. The screw-on faucets are screwed onto the metal thread of the water supply pipe.
Step 7: If the faucet is stuck, you can turn it with a wrench.
Put the wrench around your faucet by opening the handles. The wrench should be tightened around the faucet and slowly turned in a counterclockwise motion. The faucet should be turned on 3-4 times a full rotation. It should be loosened enough so that you can remove it with your hand.
Step 8: If you don't own a wrench, use a screwdriver.
You can use a screwdriver as a makeshift lever if you have issues turning the faucet.Push the screwdriver into the hole in the faucet and it will turn the spout clockwise.Remove it with your hands.
Step 9: Pull the spout from the plumbing.
You can simply remove the faucet from the water supply pipe once you have turned it counterclockwise 4-5 times. You're done if you don't need to remove an accessory from the pipe.
Step 10: If you have one, you should remove the set screw.
A threaded metal piece will fit over your water supply pipe. There is a screw on the piece.Turn the screw clockwise with an Allen wrench.
Step 11: The water supply pipe has a adapter on it.
The water supply pipe should be easy to slide on and off once the set screw is removed. To remove the faucet, take the adapter off the pipe.
Step 12: Purchase a faucet that is the same length and style.
Measure the length of your tub faucet and write it down on a piece of paper. You can use this to purchase the same size and style of faucet that you had before.
Step 13: If you are installing a screw-on faucet, wrap Teflon tape around the pipe.
There should be threads on the end of your water supply pipe if you are installing a screw-on faucet. To make it easier to screw on the tub faucet, Wrap a few layers of Teflon tape around the threads. If the threads on your water supply pipe are stripped, Teflon tape is useful.
Step 14: The water supply pipe has a screw-on faucet on it.
Attach the new faucet to the water supply pipe with screws. When the faucet is tightly attached to the pipe, turn it clockwise.
Step 15: If you use a slip-on faucet, you need to fit the faucet over the pipe.
Push the open end of the faucet onto the water supply pipe.
Step 16: The screw on the faucet needs to be tightened.
An Allen wrench is needed to turn the screw on the faucet.Continue until the screw is tight. This will make sure your faucet is in place.
