A twine ball light garland is simple to look at.You can make one for a lot less than you would buy one at a store.You can change the size and color of the balls.You can use the garlands to decorate your house, room, or garden.
Step 1: Get a strand of lights.
For a standard Christmas tree, use string lights with standard-sized bulbs.Use string lights with mini bulbs.They are often referred to as "fairy lights".You can use standard lights that you plug into a wall, but keep in mind that they tend to contain more bulbs, so you'll have to make more twine balls.Plug-in icicle lights are better for a large garland with giant twine balls.You can stuff the icicle into the twine.
Step 2: You can blow up balloons in different sizes.
You can use regular-sized balloons or even water balloons, but make sure they are the same size when you blow them up.How many blow up depends on how many lights there are.You will need a balloon for each light.You don't have to blow up regular balloons.They will end up being more oblong or egg-shaped.Don't use water to blow water balloons up.The balloon should be the same size as the bulb.Small balloons are better for fairy lights.You will need 1 balloon for each icicle.
Step 3: The balloons should be coated with some kind of liquid.
It will make it easier to remove the balloons later on.You can use cooking oil or baking spray if you don't have petroleum jelly.There is a knot at the bottom of the balloon.
Step 4: There are 2 chairs and tables.
You will be tying your balloons to this eventually, so make sure it is long enough.If needed, use more than one.Pick an area that is easy to clean because this project can get messy.A linoleum floor is easier to clean than a carpet.The floor should be covered with plastic or newspaper.It will be easier to clean up.
Step 5: Warm water and some glue.
The goal is to make a thick mixture.Plan on using about 6 parts white glue, 4 parts cornstarch, and 2 parts warm water.If you don't have cornstarch, you can use arrowroot powder.It's a good idea to make small batches of the mixture so that it doesn't dry out too fast.
Step 6: Wrap twine around the balloon with glue.
Before you wrap the twine around the balloon, make sure to run it between your fingers.It will make things less messy by removing excess glue.If you want to smooth the end, cut the twine.Wrap the twine in different directions.Wrap it in three different ways.You want to see the bits of balloon through the wrapped twine, but how much you wrap is up to you.
Step 7: The balloon needs to be tied up.
Cut another length of twine.Tie one end of the balloon to the other.The balls will be hung from different heights regardless of the height you hang the balloon from.Don't dip the twine in the glue.You don't have to use twine.You can use any spare string.
Step 8: The process for the other balloons can be repeated.
The balloons should be tied at different heights.This will allow you to fit more balloons onto the dowel, but it will also prevent the balloons from bumping up against each other.The strings and balloons don't touch if there is enough space between the balloons.
Step 9: The balls need to be dry.
Before you pop the balls, they must be completely dry.When you pop the balloon, it will collapse if the twine is damp.It can take as long as 48 hours for the balloons to dry.
Step 10: Put the balloons in the balls and remove them.
How you pop the balloons is up to you.You can use a pin or scissors.Carefully remove the balloon from the ball.The lattice-cage ball is made from twine.
Step 11: If you want, spray paint balls.
Put the balls in a well-ventilated area and hang them.Apply the paint to the balls from 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) away by shaking up a can of spray paint.Wait for the balls to dry after you have covered them.You don't need to paint the balls.Jute twine can be misted with gold paint.The amount of time it takes for the paint to dry depends on a number of factors.Wait around 30 minutes.
Step 12: If you want a shimmery effect, add some glitter.
First, paint the balls with white school glue, then shake some glitter over them, and then hold them over a tray.Ensure that the balls are evenly coated by rotating them.Hang the balls on the string so that they can dry.Work one ball at a time.Don't start on the next ball until the first ball is in the air.The glue mixture can be used again.You can use a different type of glue.The balls look nice with a glitter color.White glitter would look great over white balls.
Step 13: Attach the balloons to the light strands.
Put a ball over the bulb and tie it to the wire with clear thread.Do this for all of the balls.You can position the balls over the lights by sliding them onto the strand.Put the balls on the strand and position them over the lights.Attach the icicle lights to the main wire with clear thread.It works well for large balls made from balloons.Attach the balloons to the light.If your twine balls are too wide for the space between the lights, this is a great option.
Step 14: If you want, add some floral branches to the wire.
Cut some silk or plastic greenery to measure the distance between the balls.The greenery should be secured between the balls with green floral wire.This step is not mandatory.You don't have to do it.It works well for standard lights.You can wrap delicate fairy lights around the entire garland for a more magical effect.
Step 15: Hang it as you please.
If they don't get wet, you can hang them wherever you want.If you have to use thumb tacks or string, use them to secure the garland.If you like it, turn the lights on.Don't push the pin through the wires if you are using thumb tacks.The battery pack should be hidden behind something if you are using battery-operated lights.
