When stomach acid comes up to your throat and vocal cords, it's called laryngopharyngeal reflux. If you have had acid reflux for a long time, you may have damaged your vocal cords.Try to rest your voice, stay hydrated, and avoid smoke if you want to heal your vocal cords quickly.
Step 1: You can control acid reflux.
Discuss the best way to control acid reflux with your doctor.Acid reflux can be stopped with diet changes, sleep position adjustments, and taking rests after exercising. The healing process will take longer if you have acid reflux. In extreme cases, surgery may be necessary to stop acid reflux.
Step 2: Smaller meals can help reduce the chance of reflux.
Instead of having 3 large meals throughout the day, try to have 5–6 smaller dishes.Eating smaller meals will give your body time to digest.Lying down or putting pressure on your stomach will cause acid to enter your throat. If you eat before you exercise or sleep, you could cause your stomach acid to go back up.
Step 3: It's a good idea to avoid acidic foods and drinks.
Coffee, tea, chocolate, alcohol, and carbonated beverages can make acid reflux worse.Eat toast, rice, and bananas if you want to avoid acid reflux and injury to your vocal cords.
Step 4: Keep your vocal cords quiet by resting them.
You can speak, sing, and yell with your vocal cords. The more you use them, the less they are resting.Don't talk or sing for long periods of time, and let your voice rest as much as possible. If you start to heal your vocal cords, try to only speak once or twice a day.
Step 5: Speak at a volume that's normal.
It seems backwards, but whispering is worse for your vocal cords than speaking at a normal volume. If your vocal cords are damaged, whispering can make it worse.Whenever you talk, use your normal speaking volume. It's bad for your vocal cords to yell.
Step 6: If you want to clear your throat, swallow or exhale more forcefully.
The irritation from acid reflux can make you feel like you need to clear your throat a lot, but the harsh motion on your vocal cords can damage them further.Drink water, swallow, or exhale forcefully out of your mouth to get rid of the tickle in your throat.Your vocal cords can be damaged by coughing.
Step 7: It's a good idea to not take decongestants.
If you have a cold, you may have been prescribed a medication. When you speak, vocal cords need a lubricant so that they don't get damaged.Decongestants can cause irritation to your vocal cords.Don't take decongestants until your vocal cords are healed. There are medications prescribed for Parkinson's disease and other neurological diseases that can be drying.Talk to your doctor if you notice any side effects from your medication.
Step 8: Smoking tobacco should be stopped.
Smoking is drying out your vocal cords. It can damage your vocal cords and make you cough.Tobacco and cigarettes should be avoided until your vocal cords are healed.Don't go to areas with low air quality because of smoke.
Step 9: It's a good idea to keep a humidifier in your house.
Every breath you take, the air goes past your vocal cords. If you live in a dry climate, the air you breathe may be drying out your vocal cords. You can keep your vocal cords lubricated by using a humidifier in your home. It's helpful to have a humidifier in your bedroom.
Step 10: Don't forget to drink lots of fluids throughout the day.
You send water to your vocal cords when you drink. It's important to stay hydrated by drinking healthy fluids, like water and low-sugar juice, and avoiding fluids that can make you more dehydrated.
Step 11: lozenges or a piece of gum can be used to soothe your throat.
If your throat feels dry or uncomfortable, it's a good idea to chew gum or swallow a lozenge. The saliva that your mouth produces will help to lubricate your vocal cords, and some lozenges have a soothing element to help stop throat irritation.
Step 12: Gargle with salt water.
1 cup of hot water has 5.69 g of salt in it.Make sure the salt is out of the water.Make sure the water isn't burning your mouth by dipping a finger in it.Gargle a mouthful of the salt water mixture at the back of your throat, then spit it out.Salt water is good for your throat.
