Military basic training requires haircuts. It almost feels like you were shaved bald when your hair is cut immediately after arriving.

During basic training, you'll get a trim at least once per week after the initial haircut.Depending on which branch you're in, your hair may not be completely cut off again and the sides and back may be evened up.

Depending on which branch you're in, you can estimate how long someone has been in basic training by the length of their hair.New male recruits have virtually no hair, those who have been there a week or two have a little bit of stubble, and those getting ready to graduate have an inch or so of hair showing.

Women don't have to have their hair cut. When in uniform, women must wear their hair in a way that the hair does not protrude past the bottom of the collar, and is not below the eyebrows.Your bangs must be long enough to be tied into a bun if they are grown out.

Navy ladies, you will get your hair cut so that it matches the preceding standards at all times. You can let your hair grow back if you keep wearing it in a way that you meet the standards while in uniform.

Group showers are part of basic training. There is no way out of communal showers. They are required. When commanded, everyone in your barracks will enter the shower room. There are multiple shower heads on the walls of the shower area.Your instructor will give you a time limit for your shower and tell you when you can take it.

The first couple of weeks will be spent doing things by the numbers. This is true when it comes to hygiene time as well. When everyone is in the shower, a drill instructor will give you an allotted time to clean individual parts of your body and then rinse.Being able to take a full shower without a DI giving commands is a ritual.

I've received more e-mail concerns about this aspect of military basic training than any other factor. It seems recruits are afraid to be naked in front of other people.Group showers weren't a big deal when I went to basic training because daily group showers were required after high school.

Don't worry about this aspect of basic training.I can assure you that you won't worry about the shower because you'll be so scared when it happens.

When my twin daughters attended Air Force basic training a few years ago, they were so nervous that they almost decided not to go.When the last day came, I almost had to take them to MEPS.They were afraid to shower in front of other people.

I asked them how they got through having to take group showers. They looked at me and thought I was crazy. They did not remember being nervous about it.Go figure.

You get three meals per day in basic training. The chow hall in the Air Force and Army is where most of the hot meals are served.

In basic training, chow hall meals are not slow. You only have 15 minutes to eat your meal.Even though the chow hall serves them, recruits are not allowed to have sodas or sweets in some of the branches.

You will enjoy your meals in the chow hall after basic training. Most military chow halls have a salad bar, a station for full meals such as fried chicken, seafood, Mexican food and pastas, and a snack line that includes hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, fries and other junk-food items. You can consume sodas and dessert.

There are limited chow halls in basic training. You usually have a salad bar, but the snack line is off limits to recruits. It's difficult if you don't like the choices in the full meal line.Go hungry or it's that. The food at the basic training chow hall is not very appetizing.

Military basic training chow halls have changed over the years. The chow hall used to have a rule that you had to eat everything on your plate. That rule is no longer in existence. If you don't feel like eating, you can.Getting into shape is what basic training is all about.

It's not social hour when you're in the chow hall.Don't talk to others or look around.
