Balki Bartokomous is an actor who played Bronson Pinchot in the television series "Perfect Strangers".
Balki Bartokomous is a fictional character played by Bronson Pinchot. He is from the fictional island of Mypos, which is near Greece.
Tom Miller and Robert Boyett wanted Pinchot to play the role of an immigrant to the United States in a show called "The Greenhorn" but he wouldn't play another character like "Serge", his role in Beverly Hills Cop.He decided to base the character and the fictional island of Mypos on the people he encountered in the villages of Greece.Pinchot came up with the name Balki, after his sister's dog that she named "Balcony".[2]
Balki was born and raised on the fictional Hellenic island of Mypos, where he dreamed of a better life in the United States.Pinchot once said that Balki looks at the world like a four-year-old and sees it as benevolent.Balki sometimes gets into difficult or dangerous situations with Larry Appleton coming to his rescue.Larry realized that Balki is a very intelligent and brave man of many talents who often saves the day himself.
Balki described Mypos as a land with many strange customs and traditions. One episode had Larry going duck hunting and the normally gentle Balki asking to come along, out of intense hatred for ducks, which are regarded as vicious predators on Mypos. The description he gives of the ducks on Mypos implies that Archaeopteryx still exists on the island.Larry once said that the whole country had just one telephone and only the royal family had indoor plumbing, as it is described as being something of a primitive, backward place.
In the fifth-season episode "The Selling of Mypos", Balki's sheep-keeping skills come up a few times.Balki was sent by King Ferdinand to negotiate the sale of Myposian land to an American company.Balki did not allow the sale to go through because he and Larry wanted the land for a toxic waste dump.Balki has a stuffed animal. In the seventh season episode "Dimitri's World", Larry and Balki are writing a cartoon strip for the Chicago Chronicle based on their stuffed sheep. The stuffed sheep is made from the wool of a sheep that died saving Balki from being run over by a carriage. There is a way to reflect on what is going on.In the episode "Falling in Love is...", Balki puts out a bowl of wax lips for his date with Carol and also wears a pair of Wax lips.Their mantel has a picture of Dimitri on it.
When Balki arrived in America to live with his cousin Larry Appleton, he carried his meager possessions in a trunk labeled "America or Burst".The opening credits of the show show a scene depicting this trunk, but it was shortened from season 3 on.In the first scene of the pilot, he appears on his cousin Larry's doorstep in Chicago, explaining that he went to Madison, Wisconsin to find Larry, only to discover he had just moved to Chicago. The original pilot for Perfect Strangers was filmed with comedian Louie Anderson as the Cousin Larry character, but he was replaced by Mark Linn-Baker.
Balki talks about his mother frequently throughout the series.Balki spoke of her many times in the series and she was an unseen character until she appeared inCitizenship.Balki's mother, played by Pinchot, came to the United States to see her son become an American citizen, but due to a mistranslation, she thought she was coming to watch him. When Balki became an American citizen, his mother was hurt because she hoped he would return to Mypos.Balki's mother gave him a "chicken foot" with a missing toe, which meant that unless he did what she wanted, he was no longer her son.Larry followed Balki back to Mypos to convince his mother to let him return to the US.Balki became an American citizen. Many times in the series, Balki mentioned Uncle Stavros.
