Though the term may seem outdated, there are certain aspects of ladylike behavior that are eternal: elegance, courteousness, and a sense of respect for oneself. This article will show you how to be a modern-day lady.
Step 1: Introduce you.
If you are talking to one person and another person approaches, introduce them to the person who just arrived. In the business world, the order in which introductions are made depends on a person's level of "importance."You would first introduce the person of higher importance to the one of lesser importance, and then vice versa.Regardless of title, the client is always the highest priority. It's a good idea to add a little detail about the person you're introducing.Introduce his or her title, or how you know this person, rather than just stating the person's name.
Step 2: Thank you and say please.
This may sound like a cliché, but forgetting to say these things will make you look very rude.Whenever someone does you a favor, say thank you; it will show him or her that you appreciated it.After attending a party or other special occasion at a host's home, always thank him or her. It's a good idea to send a text, phone call, or email the next day.You should always thank people for their gifts. You could write a note thanking the person.Don't use the words "please" and "thank you" in a way that makes you look weak.If a waiter pulls your chair out for you, unfolds your napkin, and then pours you a glass of water, then thank him/her one time at the very end of the action, rather than once after each gesture. When thanking others, add details.Say "Thank you for being so understanding" instead of just saying "Thanks" for talking you through an issue. It really means a lot to me.
Step 3: Do you know when to say no?
Being polite doesn't mean letting others take advantage of you. It's important to know how to say no.If someone offers you alcohol or a cigarette but you are not interested, kindly thank them and refuse. You are easily impressionable if you give in against your will.Stand up for yourself and tell the man to back off if he tries to pick you up.Call or ask for help if necessary.
Step 4: Don't be lazy.Educate yourself.
A lady can talk.Staying up-to-date on the current events of the world requires being well-read.If you want to benefit from this, you need to attain the highest level of education that you can.You can find alternative ways to educate yourself if you aren't in school.Attend seminars and/or discussions, read plenty of books, and read the news. Most people have access to an endless amount of scholarly articles at the touch of a button thanks to the internet. Many college campuses allow people to sit in on lectures.Clear this with the institute before you start classes.
Step 5: Good posture is needed.
Standing and sitting straight is a sign of a lady.Good posture will help strengthen your core, and it's an added bonus. It will take some training to get used to this.
Step 6: Don't be mean to others.
Being a good person on the inside is what it takes to be a lady.Give your attention to the person you are talking to.It will make for a more stimulating conversation.Don't talk over others.Help those in need.It can be as simple as helping an elderly person carry their groceries, or as generous as volunteering at a homeless shelter.
Step 7: Don't be sad.
A true lady doesn't sit there quietly and let the world pass her by.She is flirtatious and engages with other people. If you don't know how to be charming, start smiling at people and compliment people more.Rather than compliment a person's shoes, tell them that you think they have a good sense of fashion.
Step 8: Don't eat or drink too much.
Being a lady requires self-control and both of these activities are examples of that.
Step 9: When visiting someone's home be respectful.
If you are a guest in someone else's home, allow the host to tell you where to sit, what to do with your purse, and so on.Some people are more protective of their home environment than others. To determine how to behave, use your best judgement.
Step 10: The door should be opened for others.
It doesn't matter if you are a man or a woman, holding the door open for other people is respectful and friendly.
Step 11: Stay calm, cool and collected.
If you are annoyed, angry, or upset, you can avoid lashing out at others.Stay calm and handle the situation rationally. You won't be able to say things in the heat of the moment that you will regret later.
Step 12: Keep your personal hygiene up to date.
This will help you look and smell your best, as well as prevent infections and illnesses. You should shower daily. If you don't want to wash your hair everyday, wear a shower cap and rinse your body with soap and water. You should brush your teeth every day.The appearance of your teeth and gums can be improved by brushing in between meals. It's a good idea to wear deodorant. It's just as important to smell your best as it is to look it.You should maintain your waxing, shaving, and/or tweezing regimen.Getting rid of body hair can make you look and feel better.
Step 13: A dress is dressed elegantly.
Dressing appropriately for the occasion, your body type, and your age is what this means.Determine what clothes are appropriate for you using your best judgement.Don't wear cheap, disposable items and buy better quality clothes which will last.Wear skirts or dresses instead of pants. They show off your curves better than pants and will make you feel more feminine.Nothing says 'lady' louder than a girl wearing a smart skirt when her friends are wearing jeans.Don't go barefoot.Wear tights or pantyhose.Flat shoes are just as good as high heels if you find them uncomfortable.Unless you are at the gym or exercising, don't wear sweatpants or tracksuits.Wearing these around all day suggests that you don't pay much attention to your appearance.
Step 14: Put your clothing in a container and keep it clean.
If your clothes are stained, be sure to wash them.
Step 15: Don't expose your skin or wear excessive makeup.
It's important to wear makeup to accentuate your beauty, not to cover it up.Don't wear bare-midriff tops. These types of revealing clothes suggest that you are trying to impress men.If you're wearing undergarments, make sure they don't show. When you're out and about, wear a little perfume. Some people can be overwhelmed by too much perfume.
Step 16: Don't start eating before the meal begins.
Wait until everyone has eaten before you start eating.Wait for the host to unfold his or her napkin and begin eating at the dinner party.
Step 17: Don't speak with food in it's mouth.
It is rude and can ruin other peoples appetites.Don't suck your lips at the dinner table. If you have to cough or sneeze at the table, cover your mouth with a napkin.
Step 18: Allow yourself to be excused when necessary.
Let others know where you are going if you need to get up from the table.
Step 19: Do not text or talk on the phone.
It is disrespectful to the person/ people you are eating with if one of them has cooked the meal for you.Wait until the end of the meal to make calls.During formal dinners, turn off your phone.
Step 20: Don't put your elbow on the table.
The rule only applies when you are eating. If the food has not yet arrived, or if you are sitting at a table drinking water or other beverages, then you should rest your elbows on the table.
Step 21: Bite-sized portions are what you can cut your food into.
If someone asks you a question when you have food in your mouth, it will give you the chance to quickly chew and swallow your food. It's embarrassing to have someone ask you a question after you've eaten a lot of food.
Step 22: You shouldn't grab for things on the table that are out of reach.
Ask someone to give it to you.Even if the person only asks for one of them, pass the salt and pepper shaker together. These items should be kept together all the time.
Step 23: Don't forget to use your napkin.
When necessary, clean your fingers or lips.
Step 24: You should make proper thanks.
If you are at a dinner party, be sure to thank the host and waiter. The person who has cooked the food should be praised.
