During the third season, the couple's daughter was born.When Pebbles is a teenager, Fred and Barney join the Bedrock police force as part-time police officers.Eventually, Fred becomes a grandfather to the twins.Despite a rough start, Fred and his new son bond well after they were adopted in A Flintstone Family Christmas.

The family's paternal side came from the prehistoric state of Arkanstone, where they were involved in a feud similar to the Hatfield-McCoy feud.The feud started when a descendant of Fred's made a joke about the artist who painted the Hatrock family portrait.In the fourth-season episode "Bedrock Hillbillies", the feud begins again when Fred makes the same joke as his ancestors.In the fifth-season episode "The Hatrocks and the Gruesomes", they visit Bedrock.The last of the Arkanstone Flintstones was Fred's great-great-uncle.

Fred's grandfather was a veteran of Stone World War One and his uncle was an eccentric practical jokester.[28]

The personality of Fred was based on those of early television's Chester A. Riley andRalph Kramden of The Honeymooners.Riley was more closely associated with William Bendix, who originated the role, though he was replaced due to a contract dispute for The Life of Riley's first season on television.Fred tends to be loud-mouthed, aggressive, and constantly scheming ways to improve his family's working class lot in life.He is very devoted to his family and Barney Rubble, his next door neighbor, despite his harshness, he is friendly and has a loving heart.Fred is impatient, but he doesn't hold a grudge and is free of malice.Fred is friendly and often goes out of his way to help others.Fred is known to go to great lengths to please his family and apologize when he goes too far.Archie Bunker from All In The Family, George Jefferson from The Jeffersons, and Mel Sharples from Alice are all based on Fred Flintstone.
