Black dust coming from door hinges, how do you clean it?
Is anyone else having this problem?Black dust is coming out of my door hinges. The woodwork and doors are stained by it.
I cleaned the pins and hinges and removed the doors last year, but it started again after a few months.
I asked at Lowes if it was due to cheap hinges, but they said changing every hinge in the house is not possible. There are 26 doors.
I will lubricate the pins with a thin layer of vaseline and try to clean the hinges again.
I believe this is a combination of hinge pin finish and pin metal that is being worn off by the slight misalignment of hinges to the pin each time the door is opened or closed. Most door installers don't lubricate the pins.To cure the dust problem, I put a drop of oil at the top of the hinge pin and rubbed it all around and down the pin.Do not put too much oil on your floor or carpet. No more problems for at least a year.
I believe locksmiths use a type of lubricant called graphite when they install locks.Anybody?
My sister has a problem with all of her hinges, and it's so bad that the black dust has stained her carpets. Thanks for the information, I have a problem with one of my doors.
I have the same problem and I don't know why.I assumed it was caused by the hinges, but didn't know why.I will have to clean and lubricate them to see if that helps.I dread more housework. That's right.
It's from the lubricant.A locksmikth once told me that he used a drop of liquid dishwashing soap as a lubricant.
I was told to use gasoline on a cloth to remove it from the doors. It worked.I don't know how long it will be before it comes back.
This is only on 2 closet doors. There is a gray black film that does not wipe off easily. The two closets in our entry way are painted white with white trim. How did you get the gasoline fix?We don't have a lawn mower, so no carry can.
You don't need much.Someone may be able to give you a small glass jar. That is enough for the lifetime of the doors.
It's not a good idea to use gasoline. It can take some time for poisonous fumes to leave a closed area. The area should be cleaned as best as possible.Mr. cleans sponges.Rub hard.Paint over it.To prevent further soiling, take the door off and coat the hardware with beeswax. It worked for me.Some people say liquid dawn works better than beeswax.
I don't know how to get it off the rugs, but I can use a fantastic and magic eraser.I'm concerned about how to remove it without making it worse.
The plumbing section of the hardware store has a toilet wax ring. The purpose is to replace the toilet.Roll and rub the pin on the wax ring to coat it.Remove any wax from the pin.The pin needs to be replaced in the hinge. If this is done every year, there will be less chance of metal leaving dust on hinges or door frames.White doors have worked for me in my home. The home builder told me about this method.
I paid for the mistake of spraying on the hinges. This worked best for me.Take a hinge off the door and use a detergent to clean it.Do one at a time.Take the pin out of the hinge and put it in a small dish with boiling water and dish detergent. The flat surface areas need to be cleaned. If the pin has blackened, I first wiped it off with a bit of gasoline and then I used a Dremel wire wheel attachment to clean it.I used my gun cleaning kit's bristle brush and cloth patch barrel bore cleaning liquid for the hinge pin guides.Great stuff. It is a good idea to dry inside with a dry patch.Attach the hinge to the door.I would only add a lube if the hinge broke. If it does, add a drop of dish detergent to the hinge and let it work.Put something on the floor.
Thanks a lot for bringing this up.I had a problem with one of my doors and I was confused as to what was happening. The suggested fixes will be looked into by me soon.
I also use Goo Gone.It works well. Will try to clean.White doors that are clean get old.Hopeful!
I used to have to take doors off and black dust would get on the carpet and ruin it, using a vacuum hose or shop vac is better.
I cleaned the plates and pins with a bike chain cleaning product and it seemed to slow it down, but it didn't fix the problem.I need to see if I can get better with one of these other solutions.
I have the same problem.I think it's related to the hinge not being properly lubricated. My passageway door in my home office has three hinges. The only hinge with black dust next to it is the one that squeaks.I'm pretty sure this means a stop/start vibration in the hinge that flings metal filings away from the hinges that are squeaking.
I took a magnet to the dust, and it stuck to it, even though I didn't actually touch it.The dust is coming from the door hinge.Steel hinges with a brass finish are almost always what you think are brass hinges.
