Bradshaw Retires, Joins CBS - The New York TimesTerry Bradshaw, Early Retirement - Pit, Super, Bowl, and...'A Football Life': Why Terry Bradshaw
I became a fan of the team in 1980.I assumed Terry Bradshaw would always be the quarterback.
Things were status-quo between 1980 and 1982.Things were changing very quickly with regards to the Pittsburgh football team.Bradshaw missed all but one half of a game that year because he had undergone elbow surgery.
Bradshaw threw two touchdown passes in the first half of the game against the Jets on December 10 in order to lead the team to a 34-7 victory.
Bradshaw re-aggravated his elbow and didn't play in the second half of the final regular season game or the playoffs.
The speculation began as soon as the offseason began, but the Steelers made a proactive move by acquiring David Woodley in a trade with the Dolphins on February 23, 1984.
Bradshaw announced his retirement at a news conference on July 24, 1984, ending the uncertainty that had lingered through the rest of the spring and summer.
Bradshaw was quoted by The New York Times as saying that this was a proud moment for him and a sad one.
I remember watching Dan Rather announce Bradshaw's retirement on the nightly newscast at CBS.I thought to myself, "WOW, that must be big news for CBS to talk about it." (Although, in hindsight, it probably had more to do with the network promoting its new employee.)
Bradshaw did many reflective interviews in the summer of 1984 with local reporters, including Sam Nover.Bradshaw did a press conference in New York when he also announced his new CBS deal, but I'm not sure if it was the one he did there or a local presser.
I think that question and many others over the course of the summer had to do with why Bradshaw retired. It was just a matter of time before something happened to mess it up again, as his elbow was not recovering at the rate it should have been.
Bradshaw said in a New York Times quote, "I wouldn't be surprised if my booth career turns out to be not unlike my football career - I'll start slow and be good in time."
Bradshaw moved from CBS to Fox in the mid-90s, when the network bought the rights to the NFC package, and has been there ever since.
Bradshaw will always be remembered as the greatest quarterback in franchise history because of the four Super Bowls the team won.
It was me 32 years ago that I watched a 12-year old watching Manning announce his retirement.
Bradshaw said at the press conference that he doesn't think there will ever be another team to win four Super Bowls in six years.
The 49ers didn't ask the quarterback any questions, even though he was ready to answer them.
