Anyone over the age of 18 who has a valid state-issued ID can buy a gun in Nevada. If you're buying a gun from a dealer, you have to pass a background check. Background checks will be required for private sales of guns in Nevada in 2020.You don't have to have a separate gun license or register your gun after you purchase it.If you want to carry a concealed handgun, you have to apply for a permit.Children can't gain access to firearms if Nevada's safe storage laws are not in place.
Step 1: Determine if you are eligible to buy a gun.
If you want to buy a handgun, you must be at least 18 years old. There are different categories of people who are not allowed to own firearms. If you've been convicted of a crime, you can't buy a gun in Nevada.
Step 2: A background check can be done at a Nevada gun dealer.
The purpose of a background check is to make sure that you aren't a member of one of the groups that are not allowed to buy a gun.Your word isn't good enough.Nevada gun dealers take information from you and use it to find out if you have anything in your background that would prevent you from buying a gun.In January 2020, you must have a background check for private gun sales.Any gun dealer can do these background checks. The fee for a background check will be $25 in 2019.Your background check results will not affect the fee.
Step 3: Wait for the results of your background check.
You can get the results of your background check in a few minutes. It could take up to 3 days in some cases.Proceed: You have passed the background check and can purchase a gun, but the system couldn't reach either "progress" or "denied" status. You can still purchase a firearm if your background check is unresolved for 3 days. You can't purchase a firearm. If you think the decision was made in error, you can appeal it.You can fill out the paperwork at the dealer.
Step 4: You should purchase a gun.
If your background check shows no problems, you can buy a gun at any Nevada dealer. Before you can buy a gun privately from an individual, you have to pass a background check. There is a valid photo ID issued by the state of Nevada. You don't have to go through a background check to buy bullets in Nevada. You don't have to register your gun or have a license to own one.You don't have to buy a gun right away. For a single transaction, each background check is valid for up to 30 days.Multiple guns can be included in a single transaction. If you want to purchase more than one gun in separate transactions, you'll need a background check.
Step 5: You should keep your firearms in a locked container.
Gun owners are not allowed to allow a child to have access to a firearm. You can't be convicted of a violation if you keep your firearms in a locked container. The container should be kept in a place where children can't get to it, such as in the top of a closet.
Step 6: Before storing firearms, disassemble or lock them.
It is not required by Nevada law to disassemble or lock your firearms before storing them.If your firearms are locked or disassembled, they won't be able to fire them.If you want to protect your firearms at your local police or sheriff's department, you can get a safety kit with cable-style locks. There is a list of law enforcement agencies in Nevada that have safety kits.
Step 7: Your firearms should be kept separate from the bullets.
Make sure your firearms are unloaded before you store them.Children can't access the bullets in your firearms if they're kept apart from them. You should keep your bullets in a locked container.Even if a weapon is not loaded in a child's mouth, it can still be dangerous.Children in your household will be safer if you store your bullets separately from your firearms.
Step 8: Children should be taught about firearm safety.
Make sure your children are aware of firearms and how to act around them.If they ever see a gun that looks like a toy, they should not touch it and tell an adult. If there are adolescents or teenagers in your household who are trained to use firearms, such as for hunting or target practice, make sure they understand that they should never touch or use a firearm without an adult present.Children are discouraged from snooping around the house for guns if they just want to look at it.Tell them that guns are not toys.
Step 9: You need to confirm that you meet the qualifications for the permit.
If you are 21 or older, you can get a concealed carry permit in Nevada. If you have an outstanding warrant for your arrest and have been admitted to a mental health facility within the last 5 years, your application will be denied.
Step 10: The Nevada sheriff approved the course.
There are approved firearm safety courses in the county sheriff's department. The instructor's fees for these courses vary.8 hours of instruction on firearm safety and competency is required for your initial permit. When you finish the course, you will get a certificate. When you apply for a permit, you must have this certificate with you.
Step 11: You need to fill out an application.
The concealed firearm permit application requires you to provide identification information, including your full legal name and any other names you've used in the past. You have to give your birthdate, Social Security number, gender, and physical description.List your occupation and employer on your application. You have to answer a number of questions about the circumstances that affect your ability to have a permit.Answer the questions honestly. If a background check shows that you lied on your application, you won't be able to get a concealed weapons permit.Do not sign the application.Wait until you get to the sheriff's office. You have to sign under oath and the sheriff has to witness it.
Step 12: Pay the fee when you submit your application.
You can apply at the sheriff's department. The fee for a concealed weapons permit has gone up.You must provide a government-issued photo ID and proof of your citizenship or lawful resident status, such as a Social Security card, US birth certificate, passport, or permanent resident card.Your fingerprints will be taken by the sheriff. The background check for a concealed weapons permit is more extensive than the check to purchase firearms.
Step 13: Wait to get your permit.
It could take as long as 120 days for the sheriff's department to complete your background investigation. You will receive a letter in the mail when the investigation is over.Your official permit will be included with your letter if your permit is approved. If you are carrying a firearm, keep this permit on you.The reason for the denial will be explained in your notification. There isn't an appeals process. You are welcome to apply again. The application fee is not deductible.
Step 14: Your permit can be renewed every 5 years.
To get your permit renewed, go back to the sheriff's office.A new background check will be done.A 4-hour shooting course is conducted by an approved instructor.Depending on the instructor, the price of the course varies.$65.25 is the fee for a permit renewal application.
