Anyone can learn braille and, like anything else, the more you practise, the better you get. We believe braille is a vital tool for anyone who is blind or partially sighted. Whatever age you are, why not give learning braille a go. Don't just take our word for it that learning braille is worth it.
How long does it take a sighted person to learn braille?
Like any new skill, braille takes time to learn. On average it takes about four months to learn the uncontracted version and up to two years for contracted. But once you've picked it up, you've got it for life. Here at Blind Low Vision NZ, we teach people who are blind or have low vision of all ages by touch.
Should I learn braille if I'm not blind?
Most seeing people who read Braille do it visually. There's no reason they shouldn't, unless they expect to go blind in the future and are learning it to prepare. Some translators are visually impaired, with enough vision to read the text with a magnifier, so they read Braille with their fingers.

While a sighted person can read 300 words per minute, some fast braille readers can whip through a book at a speed of 400 words per minute. The key to reading braille so quickly is a light touch and using both hands (one hand reads while the other is poised to start on the next line).

When an adult loses vision, it is possible to learn Braille, but it may take a little longer to acquire a rapid reading speed. you simply learn the alphabet and the numbers.
