How was Sylvan Lake created?
Sylvan Lake is a lake located in Custer State Park, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, United States. It was created in 1891 when Theodore Reder built a dam (the Sylvan Lake Water Dam) across Sunday Gulch Creek. The lake area offers picnic places, rock climbing, small rental boats, swimming, and hiking trails.

YES! Sylvan Lake draws water from the aquifer at seven different water wells positioned throughout the town. This water is treated, sampled, and distributed amongst the community. Sylvan Lake meets or is below all federally and provincially mandated water maximum allowable concentration parameters.

Fees. A temporary (1-7 days) license is $20 per vehicle and $10 per motorcycle. An annual park entrance license is $30 and you can buy a second annual park entrance license for $15. Because Sylvan Lake is part of Custer State Park, there is an entrance fee to access the lake.
