The lake is deeper than its surface area, so the lowest levels of water are very rarely disturbed, and little oxygen reaches the lowest levels. It's the unique qualities of a meromictic lake that led to an exciting discovery—where science unveiled local history.
The beach at Kelso has a designated swimming area that is lifeguard supervised during reservation times. Part of a 35-hectare lake, there is plenty of space to splash around with the kids, set up beach chairs, sunbathe on the sand, and play a game of beach volleyball.

Why is Crawford Lake special?
Crawford Lake is a very unusual lake. It is what is known as meromictic, meaning that due to its small size compared to extreme depth, the water column doesn't circulate properly. The result of this “partial mixing” is that only the top half of the lake water contains oxygen.
