Can you vomit after a fundoplication surgery?

Many surgeons will tell their patients after fundoplication surgery that they will never be able to vomit or belch again. If I had food poisoning or the stomach flu, it would make me fear that I wouldn't be able to swallow.

I have always made my fundoplication wraps less tight. Most of my patients have excellent control of their symptoms with a fundoplication wrap that allows the majority of them to belch and vomit. It may be more difficult to do either of these things. When I have asked my patients if they can belch or vomit, most of them are able to do both.

Patients should know that the things in their body tend to loosen over time. From time to time, our elders complain of this in our youth.Maybe we are the ones complaining. The fundoplication wrap created during the surgery will slowly loosen over time.As the wrap loosens, some patients will be able to burp or vomit.

Over the course of 8 years or more, many post-op patients will encounter some symptoms of recurrent reflux which may require antacid medication or even stronger medicines for it.The reflux is worse now than it was before the surgery. If you want to read more similar questions, be sure to view our FAQ page.
