Canary is a complete security system with a single device.

A simple, user-friendly, plug-in indoor camera that includes a climate monitor is an extra dose of smart home genius.

The Canary Pro is one of three cameras in Canary's small but powerful lineup of high-tech, flexible, wi-fi-enabled security devices.

The Canary Pro had several things that caught our attention. The first camera we have ever reviewed that includes indoor climate monitoring is the total home security system camera, which is targeted to renters and people on the move.

That is pretty rare, don't you think? We wanted to explore this feature more deeply after we learned about it.

Before we dug in, we had a few questions and concerns about the performance and user-friendliness of both our new Canary Pro and its accompany Canary app, which have generated mixed reviews from users who have noted issues with app responsiveness.

No security camera is perfect, but we wanted to know if our Pro could be as one size fits all as Canary claims.Ring's indoor camera, which has been a customer favorite but lacks some of the advanced motion features and flexibility options we found in Canary, was the one we wanted to know how it stacked up to cameras we've tested and reviewed before.

This camera doesn't require any real installation in the traditional sense, so let's get that out of the way first. If you are not so handy, this is great news.

This is a well-built, nice-looking, sturdy indoor camera that we found lots of great locations and uses for, but it differs from other industry-leading indoor cameras in that you can't really hang or mount it anywhere. It was obvious as soon as we got our Canary Pro out of the box that it was going to be too heavy and bulky to fit in a wall.

It is important to note that the plug-in Canary Pro is not as versatile as its sibling, the Flex, for the simple reason that it's not meant for outdoors.

The best place for this camera to be is sitting on a flat surface, where it can stand on its own and keep an eye on us.We were relieved to be free of drills, screws, and ladders.

The Canary Pro does not have a battery backup, so you can plug it into a power outlet. It is important to make sure you are close to a power outlet to run the cable to the camera.).

The location of the Pro was just a small part of our experience. One of the biggest tests of a home security camera is how it interacts with its mobile app.It wasn't easy to get that process going.

Canary Pro is a high-quality, easy-to-use indoor security camera that requires little technical expertise or skill to use and interact with every day.

If you don't have a stable connection, your camera will experience buffering, video and audio delays, and occasional missed motion. This has happened to the most advanced cameras.

When both children and one adult were simultaneously attending online school from three different laptop computers situated throughout the house, we saw these same slowdowns at times. We expected the same issues when we tried to sync our new Pro to the Canary app.

We did not expect to have to spend so much time trying to pair the camera with our phone. We tried many times, even after looking at Canary's website and app.

If this happens to you, you could end up missing crucial activity if you don't have a good camera. We suggest looking into one of the fully wired systems from Vivint. You can have a smooth experience with a fully wired system, but it can get expensive.

There was a Plan B that we invoked. As soon as we unboxed the Pro, we noticed the Ethernet1 port. For extra flexibility and a more stable connection, some brands are offering both PoE and WiFi options in one camera. In our review of Amcrest, a robust brand of cameras, we saw it.

We were happy to see that Canary's Pro model also includes Ethernet. After a number of failed attempts, we went back into the app and chose the Ethernet setup option.

Canary did not provide us with an actual cable. We had to dig up the old one from the basement. If we didn't have one on-hand, we would have faced another hurdle to connecting our camera.

It wasn't the first time we encountered setup stumbles. We had trouble getting the Reolink cameras set up in our review. We found out later that it was a blip in our internet service. When it comes to setting up and using wi-fi cameras, speed and reliability are important.

We started incorporating Canary Pro into our daily lives.Keeping in mind that your experience might be different from ours, we want to share a few key findings.

Canary's cameras are location-based, which means you'll need to keep your location on your phone at all times. It could mean missing some activity if it is turned off. It's something to keep in mind.

Once we had both Canary cams running through the app, we could simply move left or right from one live view to another. We thought this was neat, but you will have the same function with other top camera brands. We were able to see recordings from both cameras in reverse chronological order when we pulled up our timeline.

It allowed us to keep an eye on two cameras at once without having to close one display and open another. We give Canary high marks for the app user experience.

The most common benchmark for video dimensions in home security cameras is the quality of the Canary Pro's video. This brings us to a weakness we observed in Canary's products: with our less-than- perfect wi-fi connection, we didn't always see the ideal quality we were hoping for.Our picture was a bit blurry from time to time.

We may be a bit hyper-observant about this factor. As experts, we tend to pay more attention to video quality in our reviews, as we know that resolution is one of the most important qualities people look for in a security camera. Here you can see our view.

For most of the time, we were looking at a 720p picture. We tend to place that at the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to video quality.Canary was docked a few points for that.

If you want crystal-clear images and videos from your security cameras, you might want to look at a 2K or even a 4K camera. They produce some wow-worthy images, even though you will end up spending a bit more for 4K resolution.

The Canary Pro has a wide-angle lens that gives it a high field of view. The Canary Pro allows us to observe and be notified about more motion without being concerned that something would be missed. Our little ankle-biter starts looking for trouble when we are not home.

Modes are the hot new trend when it comes to motion detection in security cameras. What are the modes? It is a way for us to streamline our notifications in the app without having to manually adjust each setting so that the camera performs according to our preferences and can automatically switch between Home, Away, and Night Mode.We will explain.

When Home mode is on, we decided to program our Canary Pro to stop recording all motion. When it was time to leave the house, the camera automatically switched to Away mode and we started getting a glimpse of this little guy...

Canary's A.I.-powered person detection is not 100% accurate, and we noticed how often our dog was confused for a human. Our Canary Pro was supposed to be able to decipher between people and animals, but it didn't seem to know how to do that.We don't mind giving our little rabble-rouser the spotlight sometimes.

Canary Pro has climate monitoring. We haven't seen this exact feature in security cameras before, but we have seen it as a service offered by some of the best traditional security system brands as part of a package.

If the air quality in your home suddenly changes, you would be notified through SimpliSafe's app.If you are the kind of person who leaves an oven on after cooking, this can be helpful. It goes a long way toward preventing a house fire, and we appreciate this level of protection.

If you end up with a home security system or camera with climate or environmental monitoring, we have a money-saving suggestion: Call your insurance company. If you add environmental monitoring to your home security setup, you may be able to get a discount on your homeowner's policy.

Our Canary Pro gives us a real-time reading of our indoor temperature, humidity, and air quality. It was a great bonus to have.

To see activity charts from the past 24 hours, we simply tapped on one of the readings. We took a picture of the app interface.

We were able to adjust our preferences for even more fine-tuned notifications. Here, have a look.

We say thanks to Canary for this nifty feature. If you think it is too much, you can always ignore it.

Almost every type of security camera can be seen on the smart home train. In order to monitor your home using voice commands, most security brands now offer the option to integrate with at least one of the two.

The Canary skill can be seen on the Echo Show using voice commands. It took just a couple of minutes.

We found security cameras to be pretty straightforward in their pricing. We haven't seen evidence that a more expensive camera protects us better from break-ins or other emergencies than a standard, middle-of-the-road camera. Most of the time, you get what you pay for.

The premium plan of our Canary Pro cost $268 but we did spring for it.If you thought that was a bit steep, you would be correct. There are lots of indoor cameras that can be used to get the job done for less.Ring's stick up cam is our favorite because it comes in both battery and wired options. It delivers the same quality video and features as the Canary Pro, except for climate monitoring.

Our Canary Pro came with a yearlong membership to Canary's premium cloud storage service, which costs $99 per year, or $9.99 per month, if bought separately.

We enjoyed 30 days of video history, two-way talk, unlimited video downloads, a personal safety button, and a 2-year warranty with our plan. You can only save 10-second video clips of motion-activated recordings, rather than the whole video, if you choose the basic (free) option.

The premium service is essential for this camera. We think it would be pointless to buy this camera without being able to take advantage of everything it has to offer.

Canary's subscription is on the higher side compared to its competitors.Canary has a one-touch emergency dispatch service that is cheaper than the premium cloud storage plan from Arlo.

Canary does not allow for local storage. The only practical option is to use the cloud.

Canary should add a micro SD card slot to at least one of its cameras for true flexibility. It would help us justify the Pro's retail price, which is on the higher end of indoor cameras, but not quite as high as the $299 Indoor IQ cam.

Canary's subscription model has one more gripe we have.We knew buying a camera with built-in cloud storage would make setup easier, but one thing we didn't anticipate was having to enter our credit card information for payment.

If we were to sign up for a month-long free trial, the full price would kick in the following month.Who would want to have their financial information stored in an app for a year?

We noticed that a few users on Amazon mentioned their frustration with this format in their reviews, too.It does not lend itself to a fully user-friendly experience.

We thought we'd come away from Canary Pro with a bit of a sour taste because of the tech issues, network slowdowns, and lack of an Ethernet cable.

Canary is not to blame for the slowdowns. If there is one thing we have learned about wi-fi cameras, it is that they tend to be unpredictable at times.

We did get the Pro to sync with our phone after the first few attempts, but it took us a full day to do it.We don't know why it let us in after so many failed attempts. You are just glad it works, even if you don't know why.

Canary Pro is not a substitute for a total security system. There is no way one camera can do everything that a fully wired, professionally monitored system could do.

There was a lot to like about the Pro.Through the camera's climate monitoring feature, we were able to keep an eye on the air quality in our home.It was comforting to know that we were getting an extra layer of protection to help keep our home free of flu and other viruses.

The combination of Canary's Modes, the easy smart home automation process, and the intuitiveness of the app gave us an enjoyable, reliable camera experience with our Canary Pro.

Canary's Support Center has a search bar that helped us find answers to many questions. We sent an email ticket to Canary's Help Center about the package detection feature, and they responded within an hour.Live chat is similar to the answers we got from the search bar.Canary makes the grade for customer service.

The audio on the Canary Pro was good.We had no trouble talking from wherever we were.

Canary cameras are on the higher end of the pricing spectrum for indoor security cameras.

We did this by using the share button under the video we wanted to download. After a few minutes, the app sent us a notification that it was ready to download, and we had our share options. We were able to share our video wherever we wanted.

The Canary cameras gave us good-quality video during the day and excellent night vision, but we didn't always get the high definition quality we wanted.
