Canaries are social birds that are indigenous to the Canary Islands. They live up to 10 years and have been known to live for 20.You should be able to establish a long relationship with a friendly canary if you know how to care for them.
Step 1: A big cage is a good purchase.
Canaries like to fly from side to side, so it's important that you have a wide cage. The canary's cage should be 30” wide and 16” tall. The bigger the cage, the better for the canary. The area you put the cage in should have good light and no drafts. It should be away from doors and windows that allow for direct sunlight. It needs to be near one wall to create a sense of security for the canary. If you put the cage on a stand, it will be elevated 6 feet above the floor.
Step 2: Place perches.
Natural wood can be purchased at the pet store. You can add some diversity to your canary's experience by buying different perches.Place the perches on the sides of the cage across from one another because canaries like to fly horizontally. Some canaries enjoy swings. This should also be off to the side if you buy one.You don't want it to affect your canary's flight.
Step 3: The cage needs to be cleaned regularly.
The bottom of the cage should be lined with butcher's paper. You should clean water and food bowls every day.You can wash the entire cage with soap and water once a week.Don't use bleach. The cage needs to be cleaned.A dirty cage will make your canary susceptible to disease.
Step 4: It's important to have water regularly.
Canaries can die if they don't have water. There is a large water dish in the cage.It is good for your canary to have tap water. If your local water standards are poor, you should consider using bottled water.
Step 5: Feed your animals.
Because they are designed to include more of the vitamins and minerals that your canary needs, pliches are a good substitute for seeds. If your canary wasn't raised on a pellet, it will refuse to eat them. You can try to transition a canary to a pellet, but you have to be careful.Slowly, over a period of 4 to 8 weeks, reduce the amount of seed and increase the quantity of pellets, if you want to transition your canary to pellets.Don't stop feeding your canary the seeds if it's still not eating the pellets.
Step 6: Canary seeds can be fed.
Though they aren't the best source of nutrition for your canary, seeds are its favorite type of food.Provide your canary with a seed mix labeled for canaries at the pet store.Feed your canary a small amount of food each day.If you believe it's necessary, you can give canaries slightly more food.
Step 7: You should feed your canary fruits and veggies.
25% of your canary's diet should be fruits or vegetables.Cut fruit and vegetables into small pieces after washing them.Place a small amount in a separate dish. You can feed your canary different types of fruit and vegetables.Canaries are poisonous to canaries. There is not enough nutrition in lettuce.Fruits and vegetables that are good include apples, apricots, asparagus, bananas, cabbage, broccoli, Brussel sprout, cantaloupe, carrot, coconut, corn, dates, fig, grapes, grapefruit, and kaui.
Step 8: Feed your canary.
If your canary is on a seed diet, it's not getting enough nutrition.Feed an egg that is boiled for 15-20 minutes to supplement your canary's supply. It's a good idea to put small pieces in the treat dish twice a week. The egg will go bad quickly.Put the egg in the cage and remove it four to five hours later.
Step 9: Provide stimulation.
A swing in the cage is a good way to keep your canary entertained.Canaries are less likely to play with toys than other birds. One toy is enough.More can make it harder for your canary to fly around, which should be your top priority.Canaries roll around in damp grass in the wild. The grass at the bottom of the cage can serve as a fun distraction.
Step 10: Give your canary a bath.
Your canary needs to care for itself. You can provide a shallow water dish filled with water. The canary's perch is away from the cage floor. The plastic planter dishes are ideal. The bowl needs to be cleaned daily.
Step 11: Your canary's nails need to be clipped.
Canary nails need to be clipped twice a year. There is a vein inside the nail that can cause fatal bleeding if it is punctured. It's a good idea to consult with your vet about the proper way to clip your nails.
Step 12: It is a good idea to cover your canaries.
Canaries like to sleep in the dark.If there are outside noises or lights in the house, cover the cage with a towel or blanket to help it sleep.
Step 13: If you're sick, watch for it.
Canaries are strong. If you see signs of illness, take your canary to the vet.If you don't have appetite or begin to lose weight quickly, be careful.Droppings that are not black or white, wheezing, lethargy, and ruffled feathers are other signs of illness. It might be too cold if your canary is fluffed up for long periods of time, and if it holds its wings away from its body and pants. It likes temperatures from 60 to 70 degrees.
