Chamomile: Benefits, Side Effects, and Preparations.
The common name for several daisies is camomile.Traditional medicine uses two of the species, Matricaria recutita and Anthemis nobilis. There is no evidence that drinking or eating chamomile has an effect on health.[4][5]
From Greek, "earth apple", and "on the ground" comes the word "chamomile".The spelling "chamomile" was first used in the 13th century. The spelling "camomile" is derived from the French.[7]
The word "chamomile" is a common name for a number of other species. The species used in the herbal tea known as "chamomile" does not mean they are used the same way.The common name "chamomile" is a family of plants.
It can be used as a flavoring agent in food and beverages.[5]
The tea is made from dried flowers and hot water. There are two types of chamomile, German and Roman.[4]
In the past it has been used to make beer.Unlike for tea, in which only the flowers are used, the whole plant has been used to make beers and ales, adding a bitter flavor component favored by craft breweries and homebrewers.[11][12]
The main components of the flowers are polyphenol compounds.Preliminary research is being done on the anti-anxiety properties of chamomile. There is no high-quality evidence that it is useful for treating insomnia.[4]
It is possible to cause adverse interactions with many herbal products and prescription drugs with the use of chamomile.People who are allergic to ragweed are more likely to have an allergy to chamomile.[4]
Anticoagulants and anti- inflammatory drugs may interact with apogenin, while other phytochemicals may affect sleep- enhancing herbal products and vitamins.[5]
As it may cause herb-drug interaction, it is not recommended to take it with aspirin or non-salicylate NSAID.
"Chamomile contains several ingredients including coumarin, glycoside, herniarin, flavonoid, farnesol, nerolidol and germacranolide."Despite the presence of coumarin, it is not known if a clinically significant drug-herb interaction exists with antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs. It is not a good idea to use these substances at the same time.[16]
People with past or present cancer of the breast, ovary, uterus, endometriosis or uterine fibroids should not use chamomile.[5]
