Making your own cocoa flavoured lip balm is a great way to keep your lips from getting dry.A few ingredients and a few minutes will get you a great lip balm that you can put in decorated containers. To play up the theme of chocolate, make containers with candy wrapper lids. These are great gifts for friends with a sweet tooth.
Step 1: Put cocoa in a bowl.
You can use your spoon to scoop cocoa powder. The bowl should be safe to microwave.Don't use bars of chocolate or hot cocoa mix if you choose a high quality cocoa powder. These ingredients could make your lip balm bad.
Step 2: Add some stuff.
Take the same spoon you used for the cocoa powder and measure out some petroleum jelly.Put the cocoa powder in your bowl.If the measuring spoon sticks to the sides, use your finger or spoon to scoop out the petroleum jelly from it.You could use coconut oil, shea butter, or mango butter.
Step 3: Put the cocoa and petroleum jelly in a container.
Use a spoon to stir together the two ingredients. If the mixture looks dry in spots when you start stirring, don't worry. If you keep mixing, it will smooth out.
Step 4: The mixture needs to be microwaved.
The mixture should be placed in the microwave for 30 seconds. If you use low heat, the petroleum jelly will melt slowly. The cocoa lip balm is ready to be poured. You could melt the mixture in a double boiler if you don't want to microwave it.Continue microwaving it for 10 seconds at a time if it doesn't melt after 30 seconds.
Step 5: Put a pot of water in it's mouth.
Put an inch of water in a pan and heat it.If you put a small glass jar in the pan, make sure you don't get any water in it.The jar should be able to hold less than 8 ounces. You can use a jar.
Step 6: The jar has your ingredients in it.
Place your ingredients in the pan while the water is heating. The heat will slowly melt your ingredients.Put these inside your jar to make enough balm to fill 18 tubes of lip balm.
Step 7: Allow the mixture to cool after you stir it.
Once the cocoa butter, coconut oil, and beeswax have melted, stir them up.The jar should be left in the hot water. You want the mixture to cool in the jar.You should bring it to room temperature before handling it.
Step 8: Add essential oils.
Your lip balm won't have a strong cocoa flavor.Adding 20 drops of cocoa essential oil will bring out the cocoa flavor. It's possible to swap out a different essential oil if you're having a hard time finding one.Try using 20 drops of essential oil.You can find essential oils at health stores.
Step 9: There are containers for lip balm.
Some beauty supply stores and craft stores have small circular lip balm containers. These have tight-fitting lids.Small jars or travel-size bottles could be used.If you want to make small containers for lip balm, fill the metal beer bottle lid with it.You will need to cover them with plastic wrap if you want to use them quickly.
Step 10: A chocolate candy wrapper can be unfolded.
Remove the chocolate from the candy bar wrapper. If you open the wrapper, you'll see it's completely unfolded. You're left with the front of the wrapper if you cut off the sides and back. You can discard the back and sides of the wrapper if you eat the chocolate.
Step 11: There are patterns on the wrapper.
Put your lip balm container on the back of the wrapper. To trace around the lip balm container, use a marking pen.If you want to make more than one container, trace as many patterns as you can fit on the wrapper.
Step 12: Take out your designs.
Remove the lip balm container from the wrapper. You can cut the wrapper with scissors.Try to cut in a straight line. When using sharp scissors, be careful.Don't cut yourself.
Step 13: Glue the design to the container
Rub glue on the back of the wrapper design that you just cut out.The glue sticks to the lid when you apply the wrapper design. To remove air bubbles, Rub your fingers over the lid.
Step 14: Put cocoa lip balm in the container.
If you used petroleum jelly, fill the container with your prepared cocoa lip balm.If you used coconut oil, fill the containers with a glass dropper. The containers can be filled right to the top.For a few hours, make a lip balm with coconut oil.The cocoa lip balms are ready to use.You could put the prepared cocoa lip balm into a plastic sandwich bag and squeeze it into the container.Cocoa lip balm made with petroleum jelly will be very soft and won't stick to your lips.If you use coconut oil instead of petroleum jelly, it will become harder to store.
