Common problems and how to fix them. Why is my radiators cold?
If your radiators aren't heating up as efficiently as they should be, you may wake up feeling a little bit chilly.There are a number of reasons why this can happen.There are three of the most common cold radiator problems that you can fix.
It is possible that there is a debris block that is preventing the flow of hot water to the whole radiator.The culprit of this particular problem is usually sludge, debris, rust and other bits of dirt.Oxygen and water can cause the metal that the pipes are made of to break.This combination causes the metal to rust and as this rust breaks off, it is carried around your plumbing.Limescale can build up in the system if you live in a hard-water area.All of these things can cause a problem.A small block can quickly turn into a large one.
It's usually a sign that the hot water is getting stuck somewhere in the middle if the top is warm and the bottom is cold.
If it seems like it is only one problem, you can remove it and clean it.Use a garden hose to remove as much dirt as you can, then fit it to the wall.You can have the whole system power flushed if you think the problem is bigger than just one radiator.A power flush uses pressure to push water and other cleaning chemicals through the system, removing all the dirt and sending it down an outside drain.Every now and then, this process is worth doing to make sure the system is running as efficiently as possible.
There is air in the system or there is a stuck valve in a cold radiator.
The valve that controls the flow of hot water is called the thermostatic radiator valve.It cannot open when the heating is on because it can seize and get stuck.This is the case in an old car.
The raised pin beneath the TRV can be seen if the valve is stuck.You can depress the pin with your finger.The pin should rise again when you release the pressure.This is more than likely your problem if the pin is depressed or not easy to move.
You can try to free the pin yourself by using grease and pliers.The pin may be damaged if you apply excessive force.If you can't get the pin to move, then you should seek help from a professional.
If you have checked the TRV and it seems to be fine, there could be some air in the system.The distribution of heating water is affected by the amount of air in the system.This problem is usually easy to resolve with the following steps.
Run the heating at full temperature for 10 to 15 minutes with all the radiators on.
It is advisable to get in touch with a professional at the earliest opportunity if you are unsure about bleeding the system.
There is a balancing issue.If your downstairs radiators are cold and your upstairs ones are hot, you will have a balancing problem because hot water tends to rise upwards in a system.
If you have an issue with the thermostat, you can close the lock shield and open it a quarter turn upstairs.This won't cause a reduction in the effectiveness of the upstairs radiators, but will encourage more heat to flow to those downstairs.

Here are some other things you can check if you try to do any of the above.
If your boiler or heat pump is malfunctioning, you should check it out.
If you own a boiler, you should make sure it is on the right setting.Check that the boiler is set for both hot water and heating and that it is not in summer mode.Some fault codes can be fixed by the user, but others need the help of a Gas Safe registered heating engineer.If you are unsure, do not attempt to do anything on your own.
If you own a heat pump, you should check to make sure it works as it should and that the outdoor unit is free of debris.You should make sure that it doesn't make strange noises.
The next thing to look for is your water pressure.A manometer is usually located where the water supply is connected to your boiler.
The correct water pressure is usually around 1.0 bar for a residential gas boiler.We recommend increasing the boiler pressure if the pressure is less than this.
