Contact paper can be used as a substitute for transfer paper in a number of ways.

On the weekends, my daughter and I do a lot of crafting. It is fun to create when we have no constraints. When we find out we are out of a particular supply, it is very frustrating. We had to stop making signs because we were out of transfer paper.I will show you how to use Con-tact Paper as a substitute for transfer paper.

If you click on one of the links in this post, I will earn a small commission, but it won't cost you a penny more.Read my full policy.

I have always had to order transfer paper. It is not the type of supply that you can buy at Wal-mart.I am not a fan of the Cricut brand, but I suppose you could get it at Hobby Lobby. It is a little more expensive to buy it that way.

Transfer paper looks a lot like masking tape.It has a paper backing that makes it easy to measure and cut.Over the years, I have had my share of frustration using it.It is hard to place on my stencils because it is not see through. It is usually a two-woman job when I apply a stencil to a board.

I have to admit that.It can take the joy out of making signs. This is against the purpose of what we created in the first place.

If I apply a vinyl decals to something like I did with Made With Love In An Instant, this kind of transfer paper will work.

When I found myself without a transfer paper, I was pretty disappointed. It was going to affect our weekend plans since we were working on Christmas gifts. The clear Con- Tact Paper could be used in place of transfer tape.I gave it a try because I didn't have much to lose.

We had an 8-inch wood pine round. You can get one at Amazon, but I picked it up at the local Menards.

The design that was cut on my Silhouette was weeded. As always, we used Oramask 813.The wood round was trimmed to fit the design.

We pressed the stencil design onto the back of the Con- Tact Paper. It went on without a hitch.

I apologize for the blurry picture. It wasn't meant to be an action shot, but I ended up with it.You will get the idea. The design and transfer are on the wood round. The design was nicely centered on the board because it was placed between the clear Con- Tact paper and the translucent Oramask 813, which was much easier than regular transfer paper.

The paper was easy to remove from the stencil.I was surprised that it was easy to remove.I was worried that the Con- Tact Paper would stick to the stencil and that both would want to leave the board.I wondered if static cling would be an issue. The transfer went smoothly.I felt like the Con- Tact Paper had the right amount of stick to it.Transfer paper can stick to the stencil if it is brand new.We did not fight this.

We sealed the edges of the stencil with black paint after taking a makeup sponge. This will help the white paint, which is the color of our design, from bleeding around the edges of the stencil. Some people think this is unnecessary, but I think it's worth the pain of bleeding lines.

After the black chalk paint had dried, it was time to paint the design white.Light coats are better than thick coats. There is enough sadness in the world already, isn't there?

We don't wait for the paint to dry for this part of the process. When the white paint is completely on the design, we pull the stencil off.

We are finished!I can't tell a difference in the quality of the finished product if I use a substitute transfer material.

I thought the experiment turned out well.I was very happy to be able to replace something that I usually have to wait days to receive after ordering online with something I can pick up at Wal-mart or the local hardware store. At the big box stores, Con-tact Paper is an inexpensive purchase.

Do you know you can reuse the Con- Tact Paper on other designs?I stick it to the backing paper after I pull up the mask.I use the same piece when I make signs again.I have always been able to do that with transfer paper, so it is great to know I can do it with the Con-tact paper as well.

I don't know what I'm going to do with the Let It Snow round sign.I have a few options.I think I could drill a couple of holes in it, run some twine through it and knot each end to turn it into a door hanger.I could put a felt backing on it and use it as a holiday trivet.I could put a saw tooth on the back and hang it from the wall. Those are possibilities.

Did you like the Let It Snow design? It is free in my library. You will need the password before you can download it.It's okay if you don't have a password. You can sign up using the form below.

Is it a good idea to put this article on your board for future reference?

Contact paper can be used as transfer tape.I like transfer tape better.Contact paper is my transfer of choice if I want to use temporary stickers for my storm door for seasonal decoration. The contact paper decoration can't be moved with regular transfer tape.

Thanks for sharing, Susan!I like using it.I know I can get clear transfer tape, but I will use up my supply of Con-tact paper before I order it.You are correct that regular transfer tape is sticky. It is about perfect after I have used it a few times.

Merry Christmas and good morning. When I click on the pages of stuff, it is emails asking me if I got my gifts.I don't know how to get to the offer. When surfing through stuff, I have ADD and get frustrated. What do I do?Thank you for that.

There is a link to the Resource Library in those emails. You can get there by going to the website. There is a list of my resources in the library. The hyperlink says what the item is.It will download the file to your computer when you click on it.The cutting file and resource that I offer for free is contained in this file.If you have your preferences set on your computer, it will save that file to your desktop or downloads file.

It is impossible for me to use the contact paper for larger transfers.I can't get the smaller words to transfer quickly.

I would agree. The Con-tact paper is great for using stencils. The way it worked was great for my instant pot.I didn't struggle with it all because there were a couple of small words in the decals.

I didn't look at you.The clear contac paper they sell at Walmart was what it was.I assume it comes off. Thank you for stopping by!
