You can save money on a costume by making your own wings.Children and adults can personalize the wings with various art supplies, such as paint or glitter, to make them unique. To make wings, all you have to do is get background material such as cardboard or wire hangers, make them into wing shapes, and decorate them.
Step 1: Get some cardboard.
The simplest way to make wings is from a container of something you ordered from the store.White foam board or poster board are also good choices because the cardboard can be decorated later.
Step 2: Take out the wings.
You can trace the shape of the wings before you cut them. The shape of the wings is up to you, but one way to do it is to make them more rounded.Cut a rounded shape by starting at one end.Cut further into the cardboard, making the top ridge of the wing curve downwards to where it meets the bottom cut.You can use scissors or an exacto knife. The length of the wings is determined by who wears them.Set them against the wearer's back so they point downwards instead of out, and make them long enough to stick out a few inches beyond the shoulders. If you do them one at a time, you don't need to worry if they're not exactly the same. You can trace the wings using a writing utensil, but they don't have to be perfect. The decorations will cover the flaws.
Step 3: You can measure shoulder width.
If you're designing the wings for someone else, hold them up against the person's shoulders or try to judge their shoulder width. The wings have to be secured against the shoulders without feeling tight.
Step 4: The wings have holes.
You can use household objects to make the holes. The shoulder part of the wing has a hole on it.The second hole should be farther down. The other wing should be done the same way.
Step 5: Ribbon goes through the holes.
The loops for your arms will be formed by the string.White ribbon matches the color of the wings. The amount of ribbon you need depends on how much shoulder space the wearer needs.Wrap the ribbon around that person's shoulder before you cut it.The back of the wings have holes in them.On the back of the wings, tie the ribbon.Children who will move a lot while wearing the wings can use less fragile string.Use shoe laces or elastic cords.
Step 6: The wings should be decorated
The way you make the wings look is up to you.Coffee filters and toilet paper can also be used for angel wings.Attach the material to the backs of the wings with tape or glue. Before you add fluff, you can paint the cardboard white. You can cover the entire back side of the wings with white decorations if you want to prevent brown spots from showing through.Glue or tape the feathers at their bases to create an orderly appearance.Glue the squares of toilet paper onto the cardboard after squeezing them from their center. If you want to keep the first filters on the edges of the wings, try folding the coffee filters in half.
Step 7: There are shapes of hangers.
To make the outlines of wings, take four metal clothes hangers and stretch and bend them. The bottom two wing sections will be shorter and wider than the top two. There is a substitute for posterboard that can be cut into wing shapes, covered with felt, and decorated later.
Step 8: You can cover the hangers with felt.
Tapes or felt sticks to metal.Wrap pieces one at a time around the exposed parts of the hangers. The metal edges are softer so they don't puncture decoration material later.
Step 9: Put trash bags over the wings.
Each wing has one or two trash bags.Pull them tightly as you can over the wings. You can trim the open end until they cover more securely if the material bunches up at the end.The bags should be taped around the front of the hangers.
Step 10: Cut out the patterns from the felt.
They can decorate if the wings are for a child.Attach shapes from colored felt to the backs of the wings with scissors and glue.To create patterns like those on a monarch butterfly, lay your shapes next to each other.
Step 11: The wings need to be decorated.
There are spots on the black edges of the wings. This hides the trash bags.Adding gold and white office stickers of different sizes is one way to do this, but you can also use paint.
Step 12: Attach with a piece of tape.
The wings can be secured with two strips of Velcro. The back of your clothes and the inner side of the wings have sticky sides.Push the sides together to put the wings on.There are felt-covered cardboards that can be sewn onto arm or thumb loops.Measure the material needed by wrapping it around the wearer's shoulder or thumb.Hold the material in loops on the wings, then use pins or a sewing needle to bind them together.
Step 13: The wire hangers have to be bent.
Depending on how many you want, two to four hangers are enough.Lay the two hangers on top of each other to see if they are even.As necessary. You can make two additional square wings to attach to the bottom like Tinkerbell from the Disney movie Peter Pan.
Step 14: You have to join the hooks.
The wings should be placed on a table facing the hooks. You can combine the hooks by using a little strength to twist them around each other, even though the ends can be cut off.The twists should not have sharp ends sticking out.
Step 15: The metal twist should be covered.
If you pad the center of the wings, you will be able to avoid twisting the hangers. You can apply felt or fabric around the house.Wrap the metal around with fabric.
Step 16: There is a cover with tights.
The legs have to be removed from a pair of tights.Put a wing on one of the legs.If you have additional wings, repeat the process with the other leg of the tights. The loose fabric should be in the center of the wings.Wrap the excess fabric around the wings.Cut it into a knot so it looks neat. The tights should match the base color of the wings. When the wings are done, you can spray paint the tights.
Step 17: Cut a pair of tights.
Remove the legs from a second pair of tights.Wrap one of the legs around the center part where the wings meet.Tie the ends of the fabric together. The other leg is on the other side.
Step 18: It's a good thing to decorate.
You can modify the wings as you please. One way to do this is to add a flower or puff from a craft store by sewing it or attaching it with a hot glue gun.In spray painted duct tape, the knot may look good.Plastic jewels or glitter can be added by children to decorate.
Step 19: Measure how long the fabric is.
The length and width of the person's back determine the amount of fabric you need.Measure the wrist width of the person wearing the wings.Take their length from their neck to their waist.Add the arm circumference measurement to the length of the fabric you need.
Step 20: Get fabric.
You should get enough fabric to cover the back and arms of the person who will wear the wings.Black and stretchy fabric is a good choice. You can cut this material without damaging it.Cut out the upper and lower sections of the umbrella and use wire cutter to remove the metal pieces.
Step 21: Take the fabric and fold it.
The fabric should be folded in half from the right or left end.Your original measurement should be half the width of your fabric. You can see the amount of fabric you need to create arm holes by folding the top end of the fabric down. Before you unfold it, mark the lower end of the arm holder.
Step 22: The edge must be cut out.
Take scissors and trim the corner where you marked the fabric. The bottom of the circle should be towards the middle of your fabric while the ends should not be too far away.
Step 23: The sleeve should be folded.
Next to the cut you made, fold the remaining top part of the fabric.Bring it down so that the arm sleeve can be created again.
Step 24: The fabric has half- circles on it.
Opposite of where you cut the first semicircle, begin cutting. The corner is where you cut the first semicircle.Cut up the corner next to it to create a semicircle.Go along the bottom side of the fabric to give the wings a slope.
Step 25: Remove the sleeves.
Unfold the fabric. To create the sleeves, take the top, uncut fabric, and fold it over. The cape's bottom parts should be sewed onto it.The bat wings are ready to wear.
