Before curlers and heated curling irons came onto the market, people used to curl their hair with a few simple items: strips of rags, a comb, and water. To get this classic vintage-curl look, you will need to prepare some rags, roll your hair up and sleep in them overnight.
Step 1: Cut 20 strips of fabric in 2 in 8 in pieces.
Start with a large piece of fabric.Use cloth scissors to cut strips that are about 2 in wide and 20 in long.Any large piece of fabric will do if you don't have a pillowcase or towel. You can use any fabric that you have, even cotton or terrycloth.Old t-shirts are good for this.
Step 2: If you want to reuse seams, sew them into the fabric.
If you want to reuse your curling rags one day, sew the seams on the sides with your sewing machine. This will allow you to wash the rags.
Step 3: If you have tangles, comb or brush them away.
You want to make sure your hair doesn't tangle. The tangles can be removed with your regular comb or brush. If you have knots in your hair, spray it lightly with a leave-in conditioner or detangling solution.
Step 4: Sea salt spray is good for hair.
Sea salt makes it easier for your hair to stay in.Wait until it is damp and coat your hair with spray. When it's wet, don't start rolling your hair up.You can use plain water if you don't have sea salt spray. If you use sea salt, your hair needs to be damp before you start rolling. If you want to help your hair set, you can use a setting lotion.
Step 5: You should cut your hair in 4 even sections.
Take the end of your comb and make a small part from your forehead to your neck. The sections should be combed out again. You can make 2 more parts from the crown of your head.If you like, you can clip the sections of hair that are not being used right away to keep them out of your way.
Step 6: There is a thick section of hair between your fingers.
Take a section of hair from your fingers. It can be as thin as 2.5 cm, which will create a tight curl, or as thick as 1 in.Don't separate a new section for large, loose curls.Take the entire front section of one side and roll it up.It's important that the section is still damp before you roll it.Sea salt spray or water should be applied if it has dried out.
Step 7: The section of hair needs to be rolled around a rag strip.
Start at the end of the hair section. There is a rag spread out to its full 2 in width. If you want the curl to go, roll your hair around the rag as far as you can.Rolling up the length of your hair is not good for curling.Roll your hair around the rag until you reach your head.
Step 8: Attach the rag to your hair in a secure knot.
Tie the ends of the rag around your hair to secure it when you want the curl to stop.A square knot can be used to make it stay.It will be difficult to untie the knot in the morning if it is tight. The knot should be tight enough that it doesn't come out and cause the rag to relax. You may need to cut the rag if you tie the knot too tightly. You will not be able to reuse the rag in the future.
Step 9: Tie your hair by sections.
Roll up your hair with your rag strips. Each section should be the same thickness as your first one. Some sections of hair can be made thinner and thicker if you roll them up.Before you roll it up, make sure the hair is still damp. Before you roll it, apply more sea salt spray or water.
Step 10: Your hair should be covered with a scarf.
When your hair is tied up, use a silk scarf to cover it.It will help you to be more comfortable while you sleep and prevent the rags from coming out.Silk scarves are available at beauty supply stores and online. If you don't have a silk scarf, you can still sleep with your rag rolls in without wearing one.It is possible to reduce the amount of friction between the pillow and your hair with a silk pillowcase. You don't need to cover your hair with a scarf if you already sleep on a silk pillowcase. If you tend to toss and turn a lot at night, a scarf can help minimize tangles.
Step 11: Put the rags in the morning and sleep in them.
Take your rag rolls with you to sleep. If you aren't used to sleeping with things in your hair, the rags may feel strange, but you will get accustomed to it.You can untie them in the morning and watch them unfold. If a specific curl hurts when you lay down, the rag may be tied too tight. You can loosen the rag by untying the knot. Before you remove the rags, make sure your hair is completely dry.If your hair is still damp when you get up, you can either leave the rags in a little longer or use a hair dryer.
Step 12: Tousle your hair with your hands.
If your hair does not hold curl easily, don't brush or comb it.Spread the curls out by running your fingers through your hair.To hold your hair, spray a light layer of spray all over it.Set your hair with a volumizing spray. If your hair is fine, don't use too much hairspray because it will cause the curls to fall out.A light layer of spray will hold your hair in place.
