Gerbera daisies are a great addition to your flower garden because they produce large, colorful blooms that spread quickly. They can trap excess water which can lead to root rot.The best time to divide your gerbera daisies is in the fall or early spring to keep them healthy and happy.
Step 1: Your work area should be prepared.
The bucket should be filled with water and bleach at a ratio of 15:1.A second bucket should be filled with plain water. There is a container of rooting hormone ready. If you have a bag or box, you can discard extra plant matter. You can get ready-to-use liquid or powder rooting hormones for under $5 at your local gardening store. If you want to make a natural alternative, mix 15 liters of apple cider vinegar into 1 gallon of water.
Step 2: To dig up the entire plant, use a shovel.
Scoop out an area around the plant that is larger than the base.To pull up the entire crown and root system, be sure to dig down deep.Remove all of the excess soil.
Step 3: You can separate the individual sections with your hands.
The section where the stem meets the roots will be connected by multiple crowns.Pulling the sections apart can damage the root system. Each section should have at least one stem and roots.Use a sharp knife or garden shears to cut between the sections if they don't come apart easily.
Step 4: All flower stems, buds, dead roots, and discolored leaves must be removed.
You should be left with only green, healthy leaves and white roots after removing all of these parts. The new section of plants will look thin, but they will grow into a new plant.
Step 5: The roots of the new section should be about 3 inches long.
Don't pull the roots too hard with shears or a knife. It helps to replant flowers with healthy root systems.
Step 6: The rooting hormone should be put into the roots.
Whether you are using a liquid or powdered hormone, the technique is the same.To coat the roots, dip them in the solution.Remove any excess powder or liquid.
Step 7: The bleach solution should be applied to the roots of the new sections.
This is important if you are going to replant the daisies in a new location. The solution kills diseases so they don't move to the new space.Take the roots of the new section and put them in the bleach water.Place the roots in a bucket of water and rinse off the bleach.Unless you use a water softener, you can rinse the roots in tap water.Salt may damage the roots if the water is softened.Do not use distilled water in this case.
Step 8: You can replant the daisies in your garden by digging a small hole in the ground.
To dig a small hole, use a garden trowel. To get enough air, the crown should be level with the surface of the soil. When you replant your daisies, keep in mind that they should have 8–10 inches of space between them to allow for proper growth.Place a new daisy section in the hole.To hold the soil in place, use your hands to press it down around the base of the plant.
Step 9: If you want to keep the daisies indoors or outdoors, plant them in potted soil.
The pot should be at least 13 cm in diameter. If you want to avoid root rot, choose a pot that is well-draining.If you can, use a high-quality potting mix to make sure your plant has the proper level of nutrition. To cover the roots, dig a small hole in the pot.The new daisy section should be placed into the hole and recovered with soil.Hold the plant in place by pressing down firmly on the soil.
Step 10: You can store potted daisies in a partially shaded area for a few weeks.
If the temperature doesn't get much higher than 75 F, the potted daisies can be moved into the full sun.It is best to keep the daisies in shaded areas for hotter temperatures.
Step 11: The daisies will be reestablished if you water your plants every 3 days.
The soil should be moist. To find out how often to water your daisies is to check your plants and soil.It is time to water if the soil feels dry or the flowers are starting to die.If the soil is moist, check the next day. After the plants grow, cut back on watering.Allow the soil to dry between waterings to prevent root rot.It should be enough to deep water once per week.
