Yes. Using crouton, you can install Linux and leave ChromeOS as-is. Doing this I've replaced my windows laptop - for all my purposes. My Asus c302 chromebook now boots into ChromeOS in seconds, has Android apps, and when I need it, Linux is a keystroke away.
