Do you have to take intermediate algebra before college?

I have a disagreement with my spouse.He said beginning and intermediate algebras are the same.For a long time, I thought intermediate algebra was the same as algebra 2.It's a second level.Why would they put two different courses together?He said that beginning and intermediate are both types of algebra and come before geometry.I said geometry and Intermediate algebra come after each other.Somebody clarify this because he's gotten me confused.!

Plane geometry is taught between them.It might be different in other countries.
