Before you start wiring the outlet, turn off the power to the circuit.The main panel that controls the circuit has a breaker in it.Make sure you cut power to the correct circuit.
An electrical box is needed for the outlet.The box provides a surface to attach the outlet to.If the walls are already covered over, you can anchor a remodeling box directly to the wall.
The back of the box has about 6 to 8 inches of slack.Pull the cable that leads to the device from the back of the box if you are using the outlet to connect another device.
The cables need to be prepared for wiring.Remove 4 to 6 inches of sheathing with a utility knife, then separate the wires and strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the end of each one with the knife or wire stripper.
Take a look at the back of the outlet.You can put ends of the wires into the holes if you see them.Attach the cables to the terminal screws if there aren't any holes.Make a clockwise hook in the end of the screws if you have to attach wires.
The black wire needs to be connected to the brass terminal.Either insert it into the hole or hook it around the screw and tighten it with a screwdriver.The white wire needs to be connected to the silver screw.If there is an outgoing cable, connect the black wire from that cable to the brass and silver terminal.
Attach one of the ground wires to the green ground terminal screw with a wire crimp.Use a screwdriver to tighten the screw.
Attach the outlet to the electrical box with screws.The outlet usually provides the screws.The cover plate has a screw on it.The breaker should be left off if you are connecting another device to the outlet.
