Does buttercream frosting need to be kept refrigerated?

Do you need to keep the cake frosting refrigerated? My mother has used this recipe for many years and never refrigerated it.Milk is an ingredient that needs to be refrigerated. What about frostings and the need for refrigeration?

Yes, it does.If it is to be kept out for more than a few hours, it should be.It won't be protected for a long time by coating it, even in warmer temperatures. The process of spoiling begins soon.

If you leave out the small amount of milk in the recipe, it won't bother you at all when it starts to spoil. The majority of people's bodies can handle that much.Within a short time, thebacteria will build and become dangerously high.

I am sure she kept it covered and used canned milk which will stand out for a long time.

The FDA has become aware of the plethora of odd foods and "improper" handling of foods in the USA and has been causing such an uproar that everyone is treating their home kitchen as they would a restaurant. Is this necessary?I was raised on a farm where I drank fresh milk straight from the cow without the benefit of pasteurization and it was a real treat. The gov entities that prevented the opening of Sushi Bars for 20 years in most states were the same ones that thought raw fish was unsanitary.Once you know better, you can make your own rules.Good luck!

If it's not being left out for a long time or in hot weather, then it shouldn't be a problem.

If you leave milk out of the refrigerator, it's going to be a breeding ground for harmfulbacteria because the temperature in the icebox isn't hot or cold enough to kill them.

It depends on how soon this frosting will be put on a cake. You're safe if it's going to be used within an hour or two.You definitely need to chill.I would keep it refrigerated if you have an issue with cold foods.

I would refridgerate it.Set it on the counter for an hour or two to warm it up.
