Your life is powered by energy. The energy in your home is called electricity.Your car is powered by gasoline. What is the source of energy in your body?Your body depends on calories from the foods you eat to keep running.A unit of heat is used to indicate the amount of energy in a food.In this lesson, we will learn about the energy-yielding nutrients in the foods that provide calories. We will show another substance that can provide calories even if it's not a food.Do you want to know what it is?You will have to wait until the end of the lesson to find out.

calories are units of energyThe calories are listed on the food label when you read it.These calories are not calories at all.The kilo calories can be defined as units of 1,000 calories.Having a list of thousands of calories on a food label would make for some pretty big numbers, so we spell the word calories with a capital C to indicate that it is a kilocalorie.1 kilo calories is 1,000 calories.

Fats are the main source of calories for your body. When you eat foods that contain fats, such as meats, dairy products, vegetable oils and avocados, they provide nine calories/gram.We will discuss this in a moment, but this is a much higher yield than we get. When you are involved in endurance activities, fat can be used as a source of stored energy because of its high energy content.Fats become your body's primary energy source if you run a marathon.

Your body's first choice for energy, even though fats are the most energy-dense of the three, isCarbohydrates, which provide four calories/gram.Carbohydrates, which you get from foods like grains, fruits and vegetables, are easy to convert to energy in your body.If you're a sprinter in a 100 yard dash, your body will call on glucose, which is a simpleCarbohydrate for the fast energy needed to power your muscles.

Four calories/gram is the amount ofProtein that can supply your body with energy.Your body's last choice for energy is the three energy-yielding nutrients.Growth, development and repair of tissues are just some of the functions that are dependent on the availability of proteins.Meat, fish, milk, beans, and even vegetables can all be obtained from a variety of animal and plant-based foods.

At the beginning of the lesson, I promised to share another substance that can provide your body with calories. That substance is alcohol.Your body doesn't need a lot of alcohol, but it does provide calories, which you can use for energy.Alcohol has seven calories per gram. The calories from liquor, wine and beer are not considered to be empty calories because they do not contain any vitamins or minerals.

A unit of heat is used to indicate the amount of energy in a food. There are three calories in each of the three vitamins. They were referred to as energy-yielding nutrients.

kilo calories are listed on food labels. The word calories is spelled with a capital C.1 kilo calories is 1,000 calories.

Nine calories are provided by fats.Your body's primary energy source is stored in them and they are a great source of stored energy.

Alcohol provides seven calories per gram, so it's a source of energy, but it provides little or no nutrition to your body.
