After hearing about the deep river, Miguel was a friend to Esperanza.This fact stays the same.When they arrive in the U.S., Miguel keeps an eye out for her.He taught her how to sweep and surprised her with a rose garden.

Things seem to be working out for the Ortegas.He lost his dream job to someone who would take less money.The story ends in chapter 14 with a vision.A woman is lying on the ground next to a man.She sees a younger version of herself and Miguel, but this time they are on the same side of the river.Maybe now, things will improve for him.

He wants to become a railroad mechanic.He doesn't think his dreams will come true if he stays in Mexico.The family moved to the United States after Sixto's death.By the end of the story, there are many changes, and now the two of them are on the same side of a river.
