Formby's Furniture Refinisher, 32-Ounce, is available at Walmart.
Formbys refinisher is used with steel wool and can be poured in a pan.Does anyone have a cheaper formula? Thanks again.
I assume you are aware that there are many other "refinishing" concoctions that are cheaper than Formby's.
Do you know what finish you are working on?Do you have any experience with lacquer thinner or plain alcohol?
I wouldn't die for my beliefs because I might be wrong.Russell.
I think the finish is lacquer because it is a cheaper cabinet. We haven't tried anything yet.I thought it might be hard to work with because of the smell of lacquer.I think I should try it.
If the finish is lacquer, rubbing it down with lacquer thinner will reconstitute what's left.If the thinner you first use doesn't work very fast, go to a play that sells spraying supplies, and get the stuff they recommend for thinning lac.It is about double the cost, but it is a "hotter" mixture, and will work faster.Russell.
I don't like Formby's or any other liquid in pan type strippers. It's nothing but elbow grease, torn gloves and drips when you're fully exposed to the fumes.I prefer 5F5 strippers. It works on everything.
What is 5f5?I don't know if it's referring to something or a product.Where would I buy it?
5F5 was made by sterling. In my area, most paint stores carry it.It's a semi paste stripper. Many other companies make the same product.I would call it a clear loose jelly.Give it a coat of paint and let it work.Use rags, brushes or Scotch brite pads.I've tried a lot of different stripping products and this one has been the easiest and most consistent.
I have never heard of 5f5.Some strippers are only available in certain areas.James B.'s semi-paste remover is MARINE STRIP.Day.It's sold in a couple of paint stores I frequent, but I haven't seen it anywhere else.I wouldn't die for my beliefs because I might be wrong.Russell.
Not sure if this is an older cabinet or a newer one.Chances are you're facing a conversion finish if newer. The liquid stripper wouldn't work as well on this as it would on a nitro-cellulose lacquer.Stick to the semi-paste strippers if you want a conversion finish.Methylene chloride is a good friend.
I remember part of what Homer Formby used to say.It was the same as Acetone, Benzene, Xylene, and Tolulene.I think he only mentioned that.I'm not positive that there was a fifth ingrediant, but I was told that they were hard to find in stores. He recommended his formula because of that. His show used to have mixes for revitalizing and household cleaning. He was a big fan of the oil.He used to say that it was the most expensive oil around, but was impressed with its properties.
One of the most versatile tools in the shop is the block plane.
The top of this table can float without overshadowing the rest of the design or blocking the flow of light between the base and top.
