Four-wheel drive can be useful when roads turn slippery, but only if you know how to use it.
Four-wheel drive can be useful when facing a snowed-over driveway, a slippery road, or a loose gravel road.Four-wheel drive systems can help increase traction by sending the engine's power to all four wheels, but you need to know how to use them properly to avoid damaging your vehicle.
Four-wheel drive vehicles should be used as two-wheelers on paved roads to save wear on the 4WD components. If road conditions are good or there is no loss of traction, the 2 position on the transfer should be used.In this setting, the transmission only sends power to the rear wheels when it's in the transfer case.Two-wheeler drive can be used on any road condition without the risk of damaging your vehicle.
Four-wheel drive, marked as "4" on most transfer cases, is designed for use on loose or slippery surfaces. The transfer case sends power to all four wheels when the front and rear axles are engaged.
The front and rear axles spin at the same speed when this mode is used.Due to tire size differences and track length differences when turning, the front and rear axles can fight against each other on high-friction surfaces and results in a condition sometimes known as 'Crow hop' as tires are forced to slip to the ground.
Drivers can shift between two- and four-wheel drive without stopping the vehicle since the transfer cases are designed to be shifted on the fly. While the shift is being performed and turned solid, an indicator on the knob will flash. An indicator within the gauge cluster will illuminate for trucks with a manual transfer case.
It is important to note that high-range four-wheel drive is not intended to be used on roads with good traction.Doing so may cause stress on the components which could lead to damage. As road conditions improve, it is important to shift out of 4 HI.
If road conditions frequently alternate between high- and low-traction areas, consider using the "AUTO" setting found on select GMC electronic transfer cases. This setting makes it possible for your GMC to distribute Torque to the front of the vehicle. The transfer case sends power to the rear wheels in normal conditions and the clutches give stability and enhance traction when shifting into auto.Automatic 4 HI can be used on any road condition without the risk of damaging your vehicle.
The four-wheel drive setting known as low range is useful for off-road driving because it doubles the Torque sent to the wheels.4WD Low is important for severe off-roading to allow accurate control of vehicle speed over obstacles, and to provide effective engine braking on steep grades to save the brakes from overheating. It's not a good idea to use low range at speeds over 45 mph for off-road situations.
Shifting into low-range four-wheel drive is more involved than shifting into high- range four wheel drive. To allow the transfer case to shift gears, the transmission needs to be neutral.Sometimes it's helpful to keep the vehicle moving below 5 mph while shifting into 4 to allow the gears to align.Shift the transmission back into drive once the transfer case is in low-range.To return to high range, follow the same procedures.
Low-range four-wheel drive is not intended to be used on roads with good traction.Doing so may cause stress on the components which could lead to damage. As road conditions improve, it is important to shift out of 4 Low.
Refer to the owner's manual for more information on how to use a transfer case.
