Nick is a fifth graders with a vivid imagination and a lot of motivation to create.He is a popular boy who is known for coming up with elaborate time-wasters that can fill up an entire period and make a teacher forget about giving a test or a homework assignment.He is a good-hearted kid who just wants to have fun at school.He is a good leader as his classmates follow his lead.He is family-oriented as he shows when his trust fund becomes available to him and he insists on giving a share to both his brother and his parents.

Although Nick's new word causes a furor, he is adamant that it is doing no harm and that Mrs Granger told them people did to create a newword.As long as he is not hurting anyone, he will not be swayed from what he thinks is right.

A Language Arts teacher by the name of Mrs. Granger has a formidable reputation.She believes that the most important book in the world is the dictionary.She wants to extend the vocabulary of every fifth grade student in her classroom.She tends to overreact to any challenge to the status quo of the dictionary.She sees Nick's troubles as a challenge and feels that the word of the teacher should be the rule.She is proud of him for following through on his imagination in creating the new word.Every year she receives gifts and appreciation from her students despite her reputation.

Even if she is angry with her son in private, Nick's mother will still defend him in public.She thinks the entire episode to be a gross over-reaction and that its importance has been overstated.She feels that it is important for children to be able to use their imaginations, despite the fact that she has enormous respect for the word of the teacher.

Nick's father expects Nick to be respectful of the teachers at his school and not to cheek them, or cause trouble, but he is privately very proud of his son for coming up with a new word that is really catching on.He doesn't like the spotlight and attention but prefers the quiet life of fame and fortune.

Bud is a successful businessman with many successful companies and franchises in town.He can spot a successful gimmick and turn it into a moneyspinner.It's partly his products that keep the new word alive in Westlake and his business savvy that creates a fortune out of it.
