If something burns, microwaves tend to absorb the smell of the food you cook in them. This can lead to unpleasant odors over time. The best way to get rid of these is to give your microwave a thorough cleaning. If that isn't enough, you can try a couple more steps to get rid of odors.Taking a few additional measures will help keep your microwave smelling good.
Step 1: A water and vinegar mixture can be microwaved.
In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine 12 cup of water with a small amount of white vinegar. For five minutes, nuke the mixture in your microwave. For about 10 to 15 minutes, let it sit with the door closed. This will allow any gunk or crusted bits of food to absorb the steam, which will make them loose and eliminate most odors.
Step 2: The microwave should be emptied.
First, take out the bowl of water.Since the bowl may still be hot, be sure to wear oven mitt or another form of protection. If your microwave has a rolling ring that rests on the glass plate, you should remove it.
Step 3: To clean the inside, wipe it down.
A paper towel, microfiber cloth, or similar material can be dampened. This can be used to clean the inside of your microwave and door.If you need more than one towel or cloth, repeat.
Step 4: You can use a scrub brush.
If the bits of food are too tough for a paper towel or cloth to handle, use a scrub brush. In a spray bottle or bowl, add one part water and two parts vinegar. If you want to scrub vigorously, you can either dip your brush in or spray the area.
Step 5: The plate should be cleaned along with its support or ring.
It is a good idea to clean these in the sink.To give them a thorough scrubbing, use warm water, dish soap, and a sponge. Before putting them back in the microwave, rinse them under clean water and then dry them with a dish towel.
Step 6: After cleaning, perform a test.
It is possible that washing the inside of your microwave will rid it of odors.Give it a sniff once you are done.Move on to the next step if you still detect the same smells. If not, open the door and let the scent out.To make sure the vinegar didn't make the odors worse, test again later on.
Step 7: It's time to switch to baking soda.
If it didn't get the job done the first time, it's not worth counting it out.Dust a sponge with baking soda if the smell persists. For 25 seconds, the microwave is on high. The sponge can be used to wipe down the inside of the microwave.
Step 8: If needed, remove nail polish.
If wiping your microwave down a second time doesn't work, you can use acetone-free nail polish remover.Put cotton balls or cotton pads in it.You can use these to clean the inside of your microwave.
Step 9: If you use the nail polish remover, remove it.
These chemicals should not be left in your microwave. The nail polish remover can be washed away with a sponge. The inside should be wiped down with a one part water to two part mixture. The door should be left open so the microwave doesn't work.
Step 10: It's a good idea to microwave something.
You can get some fresh fruit, like oranges or lemons.Cut the lemon in two and peel the oranges. The water should be in a bowl with 1 or 2 cups. The orange or lemon halves should be added. To avoid burning fruit breaking the water's surface, microwave for four minutes.Allow it to sit for 30 minutes to 12 hours with the door shut.If you used nail polish removal, this is a good idea. There should be no smell from that.
Step 11: Baking soda or coffee grounds can be used to absorb odors.
Simply put an old box of baking soda inside the microwave.Allow it to sit for 12 hours so that it can absorb odors.Fresh or used coffee grounds can be dumped into a cup or bowl. It's a good idea to keep odors from growing stronger between uses.
Step 12: To avoid more smells, clean regularly.
After every use, give the inside of your microwave a quick wipe down with paper towels and a mixture of one part water and two parts vinegar.Keep the door open if that isn't possible. It should be cleaned at least once or twice a month.Any spills should be cleaned immediately. These will cook and stink up your microwave if you don't.
