We start where we left off.The kind of story we needed to tell this season was predicated on the fact that we had left Cullen in a place where he married a young woman and had a child.When we lost our actress, we got into some scheduling conflicts and were unable to bring her back.We were considering how we should handle this.The twoDarrens situation is always brought up when you have that conversation.We went ahead with it even though it wasn't my first choice.She has grabbed onto this part and brought a soul to it.My first expectation was that his character would marry her out of honor, and I was standing on the set talking to Anson about it.We have established a pretty strict moral code with him, which doesn't preclude him from shooting people in the head when they need it, but he would not be allowed to walk out on a woman in that situation.I was prepared for him to say, "I'm doing this out of responsibility" because he's a Southern gentleman.I was surprised to see that there was a love affair happening between the two characters in the film.The baby is born and we see him interacting with the baby, and I think he is surprised at how he feels about them.
Naomi is a very good Mormon woman, and she is very clear about her position in the world as a Mormon and her Mormon wife.We end up with some pretty interesting drama when she comes up against some of our other characters, who are pretty forward thinking for 19th century women.She was born and raised in the wilds of Nebraska, which makes her a tough and caring person on the inside.
