If you have external gears, stand behind your bike and take a look at the right side of the rear wheel. There should be a cluster of gears on the right-hand side. This is your cassette. Count the number of gears (or steps) in the cassette.
How important is the cassette on a bike?
The cassette is an important part of the drivetrain that is responsible for rear-wheel drive. The range of gears on your cassette combined with the number of teeth on your front chainring will give you gearing ratios to tackle different terrains efficiently/easily with your bicycle.Sep 6, 2019
What is better cassette or freewheel?
Which is better? A freewheel has a lower number of gears so is better suited for casual riders who don't require the larger selection of gears available from a cassette. It's much better coasting, allowing you to rest your legs, and if done correctly, can be useful when climbing hills and easier coming down them.
