We do not recommend using Rit to dye upholstered fabric because after the dye is applied, the excess dye must be removed. This can be difficult to achieve with furniture and if the excess dye is not completely removed, it can rub off on clothing.
What happens if you don't rinse out Rit dye?
Dyeing polyester with Rit all-purpose dye will not work. If you avoid rinsing at all, in an attempt to maintain some color, then the unrinsed dry dye will rub off onto whatever touches it, ruining clothing or furniture and exposing everyone to breathing potentially allergenic or slightly toxic dye powder.

How long is Rit dye active?
Stir slowly and continuously on and off for 20 minutes. If you dyed the clothing, it is very likely that unbonded dye that is still on the fabric will end up in the bath. That is completely normal and will not alter the results.

How long is Rit dye good for once mixed?

How do you keep fabricdye from fading?
Wash in cold water, which keeps fibers closed, trapping dye inside. Warm water opens fibers and sets dye free. Many detergents work well in any water temperature, and using cold water also saves money. Wash clothes using the permanent press or gentle setting, which are easier on your laundry than regular cycles.
What can I use instead of dye fixative?
The only substitutes for soda ash as dye fixer are high-pH chemicals, such as trisodium phosphate or sodium hydroxide. Soda ash is the best choice, however. Note that sodium carbonate is of no use in dyeing with natural dyes, nor with all-purpose dyes.
