That first canoe gave way to Preszler Woodshop, where he handcrafts custom canoes with hundreds of wood strips, cast-bronze trim and hand-stitched leather seats—a year-long labor of love that comes with a price tag of about $100,000.
Canoes were made in the same way as skin boats were made. A wooden hull or frame was formed from a light wood, which was then covered with a waterproof material such as canvas. The wooden frame work was also formed in a variety of ways.
