How much landscaping rock do you need?
How much material you will need is a key question when you are planning a project.
Calculating accurately can save you money. It is important that you have enough rock to adequately cover your landscape. You have wasted money if you order too much.
When calculating the amount of landscape rock to order, there are two factors to consider.
Measure the length and width of your project area to calculate the size.Take the two numbers and divide them by the square footage of your coverage area.If your project is 18 feet long by 20 feet wide, your coverage area is over 300 square feet.
How deep do you want your coverage to be?2 inches is adequate for most purposes. If you use materials that are larger than 2 inches, the depth will probably be the size of the rocks, that is, you will just want one layer of 3-8 inch rocks.
Depending on what size of rock or gravel you want to use, the amount of landscaping rock will vary. You can get a general estimate of how large an area is with this chart.
This chart can be used to come up with the amount of material you need. When you measure your project area, take the square footage you came up with and divide it by the coverage area number in the table above.
You can see that if you want to cover a large area with rocks, you will need 4.5 tons. You may only need 3.6 tons if you use smaller materials.
