Garbage disposal removal can be a lot of work.Doing the job yourself will save you money. You will be able to remove your garbage disposal at a low cost if you complete a few steps.
Step 1: The garbage disposal has a power supply.
The power supply should be shut off from the circuit breaker. You can control the electricity going to the garbage disposal by flipping the switch. The power supply has been shut off by trying to turn the garbage disposal on.
Step 2: There is a garbage disposal in the wall.
The garbage disposal is on the wall. The wires need to be disconnected if the unit is hardwired into the home.If the unit is hardwired to the house, you have to use a screwdriver to remove the plate covering the wire connections on the disposal. The plate covering the junction box on the wall needs to be removed.Attach the disposal wires to your home wires by twisting the wire caps.Attach the junction box plate to the wire capes by twisting them over the exposed wires. Before putting the wires back in the junction box, you should use a voltage tester.
Step 3: Remove the dishwasher hose from the barbed dishwasher nipple.
The dishwasher is connected to the garbage disposal.Garbage disposals that are connected to a dishwasher only apply.
Step 4: There is a bucket under the pipe.
There may be liquid leftover when you disconnected the pipes.Any wastewater left in the pipes will be caught by placing a bucket underneath them.
Step 5: To remove the p-trap's fittings, use a wrench, pipe wrench or tongue-in-groove pliers.
The pipe that connects to the garbage disposal takes the wastewater away from the disposal.
Step 6: The water should be allowed to drain into the bucket.
Take the water out of the pipe and put it in the bucket.
Step 7: The garbage disposal needs to be removed.
Some models have a snap ring while others don't.To remove the snap ring, insert a flat-head screwdriver under the ring and pry it open. The underside of the garbage disposal needs to be held with your hand. They are very heavy. If the disposal drops you should put rags on the bottom of the cabinet to protect it from damage.
Step 8: Remove the mounting assembly.
First, loosen the three mounting screws that hold the upper and lower rings apart.Remove the ring that is in a grooves on the sink sleeve and then remove the rest. The debris from the sink opening should be cleaned out.You can leave the mounting assembly if you replace your disposal with the same one.
Step 9: If you don't want to install a new garbage disposal, you can use this method.
The new sink drain will connect to the waste pipes and allow wastewater to drain directly from the sink into the drainpipes.
Step 10: The sink drain is secured by a nut.
Use a pipe wrench to loosen the nut.The sink drain can be pushed up through the sink.
Step 11: Use a knife to clean the drain hole.
The putty should be removed using a knife. If the putty is hard to remove, you should use a razor. To clean the area, use a scrubbing pad and water.Rubing alcohol or spirits can be used to remove the putty.
Step 12: Place the rope in the drain.
The rope should be long enough to go around the drain.Set the drain into the sink opening by placing it on the underside lip.Press the drain down and wipe it clean.
Step 13: Attach the washer to the drain.
When it is purchased, the drain will come with a washer. To secure the large nut that comes with your drain, place the washer over the threads on the underside of the drain.Use tongue-and-groove pliers to tighten the nut.Someone should hold the drain from the top so it doesn't move. After securing the drain, remove excess putty.
Step 14: Find the tailpiece.
The drain will be connected to the elbow pipe.It needs to be at the same level of the pipe as it is connected to.Attach the tailpiece to the sink drain.
Step 15: Attach the tailpiece to the elbow pipe.
Attach the pieces together to make a bend in the pipe.
Step 16: The elbow and sink need to be connected.
The elbow piece needs to be connected to the T-fitting on the adjacent sink.Depending on your sink, you might need to cut the piece down to the correct length. The tongue-and-groove pliers can be used to secure the pieces together.
Step 17: If you want to replace your garbage disposal with a new one, use this method.
If you install a garbage disposal of the same brand, you could keep the mount on the sink drain.
Step 18: Put a rubber seal on the drain.
Your new disposal will usually come with a rubber seal.Wrap it around the drain hole and put it in.If your disposal does not have a rubber seal, you will need to use putty.
Step 19: Attach the metal backup ring to the rubber seal on the underside of the sink.
There are provided seals on the underside of the sink.Attach the metal backup ring to the sink using a flat side up method.
Step 20: Attach the ring.
Attach the ring with three screws.Attach the mounting ring to the snap ring.Make sure the assembly is tight and even by tightening the three screws. The mount is ready for the garbage disposal.
Step 21: The new disposal needs to be prepared.
Turn the disposal upside down and shake it to get rid of anything inside.Pull the wires away from the disposal.Feed the electrical wires into the disposal through the strain relief sleeve. If you want to connect the disposal to the dishwasher, you need to remove the knock out plug with a hammer and screwdriver.
Step 22: The wires need to be connected.
You can connect the ground wire to the green screw on the disposal and then switch the wires between black and white.Attach the connections with wire nuts. The cover plate needs to be replaced.
Step 23: Lift the disposal and put it in place.
Push the disposal into the mount. The locking ring should be turned until all three housing pins catch.Slip-joint pliers are used to finish tightening the locking ring. The pins should be snapped into place.
Step 24: Attach the pipes
Attach the disposal drainpipe and the tailpiece to the other sink drain. There should be p-traps on the disposal and the tailpiece from the other sink.Straight pipes and a T-fitting can be used to connect the two drains and route the drainpipes into the main drain. At first, the pieces were dry fit together.Attach the pipes using glue on the outside and inside of the fitting. The glue will make the material strong.
Step 25: The dishwasher drain line needs to be connected.
If you knocked out a plug while running the dishwasher drain through the disposal, you need to connect the pipe to it.
Step 26: The sink should be turned on to let water through.
Allow water to run through the pipes for a few minutes to make sure nothing is leaking. If you test your pipes, you can prevent problems in the future.
Step 27: The power needs to be turned back on.
The disposal can be powered up by flipping the circuit switch at the electrical service panel. The installation is finished if all works correctly.
Step 28: If the garbage disposal has stopped working, you need to fix it.
Check to see if your garbage disposal needs to be replaced. If the disposal isn't making a humming noise then the problem may be electrical. It may need a sub-breaker reset if it makes a humming sound but doesn't work.
Step 29: Make sure the disposal is plugged in.
Make sure that your disposal is plugged in correctly.
Step 30: The rest button is on the disposal.
If this resets the garbage disposal, it will pop out.As it goes back in, it will make a click.
Step 31: The outlet circuit breaker should be checked.
Check to see if the circuit breaker has not tripped in the electrical service panel or breaker box.The switches should be on at the box.
Step 32: The circuit breaker switch needs to be replaced.
There is a faulty garbage disposal or switch if nothing else has worked. If that is the problem, replace the switch and turn off the circuit breaker at the service panel.Power should be turned on at the service panel after the switch is replaced. The disposal will have to be replaced if none of the steps are effective.
