Adding numbers is similar to adding decimals. The only thing you have to do is line up the points and write them in your number.
Step 1: Understand place values.
A number can have more than one digit. The number 472 has a 7 in the "tens place," a 2 in "ones place" and a 4 in a "hundreds place."The 2 is just worth 2, but the 7 is ten times as big as it looks. It actually means 70.The 4 in the hundreds place is ten times larger than before.
Step 2: Understand numbers.
If adding digits to the left of a number leads to higher and higher place values, it makes sense that the right digits get smaller and smaller. To show that we're using place values smaller than one, we place a decimal point after the ones place. The digits after the decimal point have a place value that is divided by 10 when you move right. The number 1.65 has a 1 in the ones place, a 6 in tenths and a 5 in hundredths place. The 6 is one-tenth as big as it looks, and the 5 is just 0.05) smaller.
Step 3: Put the points of the numbers together.
In one vertical stack, write each number on a separate line.Every digit in a column has the same place value if you line up the decimal points.Write 31.8 over 0.45, with the 1 over the 0 and the 8 in the tenth place.
Step 4: If necessary, line the numbers up with zeroes.
If you don't use the same number of digits or place value in your numbers, they may not line up.Adding 0s to the beginning and end of the numbers will give them the same number of digits.Since there's nothing in that place value, this doesn't change the value of the number. They line up over each other if you write 31.8 + 0.45 as 31.80 + 00.45.
Step 5: The decimal point should be brought down.
You can write the decimal point on the answer line if you want to.
Step 6: The numbers can be added in the right column.
It's like a regular addition problem at this point.Put the numbers in the column furthest to the right and write the answer under them.Start with 0 + 5 if you want to solve 31.80 + 00.45.Underneath that column, write the answer, 5.32.10 + 00.45 is.
Step 7: Carry the 1 if you get an answer 10 or greater.
If you get a two-digit answer, you need to carry the 1 into the next column on the left. The next column to be added is 8 + 4.The answer can't fit in a single digit.Carry the 1 into the column to the left, and write the 2 in the answer line.31.80 + 00.45 is.
Step 8: Continue until you run out of columns.
Continue the same way until all the digits have been added.Carry numbers should be included in your addition.Adding the next column is an example. The final column (3 + 0) is added.
