How to Apply Wax to Chalk Paint: 12 steps with pictures, Wax or Polycrylic over chalk paint?
It's a very common question if you want to sand or distress Chalk Paint® before applying clear wax. When I first started using Annie Sloan products, I asked it as well.I hope this small post helps you.
I like the combination of Versailles, Antoinette and Old White Chalk Paint.
I decided to use them all on a piece of furniture.I mixed Old White and Pure White into the Antoinette to make it softer.
I used a medium to fine sanding block because I wanted to give the piece a weathered/worn look.
I like to sand chalk paint before waxing.I prefer that because it is less effort.I use a sand sponge or 200 or 220 grits of sand.I don't use a power sander.I like to feel the piece and it doesn't take much strength to do this step. The finish of the chalk paint is silky smooth and I like how it is polished.
I usually only apply one coat of wax for pieces I keep in my one home because I prefer to sand before applying clear wax.I need to apply another coat of wax because I only apply one coat over the sides of the drawers.
Since I don't know how the piece will be treated once it is sold, I always do a minimum of 2 coats of wax.I sometimes say that there are people who use furniture and then there is someone who abuses furniture.
I strongly recommend that you use a drop cloth at home because if you try to mop up that paint stench, you will create something. It was a wash all over your floor.Don't do that!
I will sometimes take triple zero steel wool and rub it over a finished piece that has been wax. This change in the sheen of the surface will make it feel like glass.
I like to use a sand block or sand paper to remove paint from a spot that it shouldn't be.On the side of a drawer.
