Hawks are part of the group of predatory birds. They are also beautiful to look at.If you can attract hawks to your property, you will be able to control the rodents.Make sure you don't use poison baits on your property if you do so.A hawk could eat a rat that has a poison inside of it.hawks will prey on other types of small birds, so if you want to protect the rest of the local bird population, don't encourage hawks to come around.
Step 1: If you don't have a water source, add one to your property.
A bird bath, fountain, pond, or other water source is needed.Hawks are more likely to come on your property if there is water readily available. If you live in a dry area, this is important. It's not necessary if you have natural ponds or other water sources on your property.
Step 2: Bird feeders can be put up to attract birds.
Attach bird feeders to things like fence posts and structures on your property.Small birds will hang around if they are stocked with bird seed. The more different types of prey there are, the more likely hawks are to take an interest in the area.
Step 3: Attach hunting perches to trees and posts.
Pieces of lumber are 1–3 ft long.To give hawks something to sit on and scope out their prey, nail or screw them across dead trees or wooden posts.Only on your property can you do this.Don't nail an artificial perch to a tree that is growing well.
Step 4: Don't clear dead trees and brush.
It is better to leave dying and dead trees standing than to cut them down and remove them.If you don't have to clear wooded or brushy areas on your property, you should. It's important to remember that hawks are more attracted to more natural environments than perfectly manicured yards and gardens, so don't plant a lot on your land.
Step 5: Acquire 18 ft of 2 in by 4 in lumber.
If you can, use spare weathered lumber on your property.Purchase new lumber at a lumber yard if you don't already have it.Hawks are more likely to use something that has already been exposed to the elements than a fresh cut.Old barn lumber or spare fence wood can be used.
Step 6: Cut the lumber into 9 pieces.
You can cut the pieces with a power saw at a home improvement center. The platform is large enough for hawks to use to nest.
Step 7: The pieces should be put into a square.
The pieces should be placed about 2 ft apart. To form a square, lay 2 more pieces across the top of the first 2 pieces. To screw the pieces in, use a power drill to drive wood screws through them.Use screws that are resistant tocorrosion.
Step 8: In between the 2 top pieces, attach 3 evenly-space pieces.
It looks like the slats of a bed frame if you lay 3 more pieces on top of the 2 that are already there.Put them in place with wood screws and a power drill.Hawks can stuff material in between them to build a nest on the platform.
Step 9: The platform should be at least 14 ft high.
Purchase a wooden post or use a post that is already in the ground. You can use a dead tree as an alternative post. You could get a pressure-treated timber post that is 14 feet long by 10 feet wide.
Step 10: Attach the platform to the post.
The pieces on either side of the post need to be screwed together.Attach it to the platform with screws. If you are mounting the platform on a dead tree or if it is already in the ground, use an extension ladder and safety harness.
Step 11: The platform should be placed near other trees or a wooded area.
Hawks are not attracted to a platform in the middle of a clearing because they are woodland creatures. For better chances of attracting hawks, position the platform in a more natural environment.
