How To Attract Pigeons

Pigeons are a common sight in cities and can be fun to feed. You can attract wild pigeons to your yard if you are near a city or rocky cliffs. It is easy to put some of their favorite foods outside.Adding a water source and well-pruned bushes can help improve your yard.It is illegal to feed pigeons in some areas. You can enjoy watching the birds during the day if you can attract them.

Step 1: Pigeons eat seeds and grains in the wild.

It is impossible to go wrong with cracked corn and wheat.Birds eat millet, dried peas, and sorghum.Pigeons are well-known for picking up food left behind by people, such as bread crumbs, fries, and anything else that looks like it might be tasty. They sometimes eat fruit and bugs, but they prefer seeds and grain when they can.The food can be eaten without being cooked.Pigeons eat seeds and raw grains. If you can, avoid people food because it doesn't offer any value to pigeons. If you want to keep birds healthy, feeding them crumbled bread isn't the best choice.

Step 2: Pigeons can perch on open platform or tray feeders.

Pigeons can't use small feeders because they're bigger. The platform feeders are open.Use a wide side ledge for pigeons to stand on while they reach for food.If the feeders are accessible with sides for pigeons to perch on, you can use other types of feeders.Pigeons are happy to eat from the ground as long as no one disturbs them.If you are away from home, scatter some food.

Step 3: The feeders should be hung low to the ground near plants and trees.

Bird feeders can be hung from a wide variety of places. To keep other animals out, position it so it is about 5 feet from the ground. The feeders should be left in the open.Pigeons can hide from other animals if they are within range of some bushes or trees.Make sure the spot is protected from the wind so the feeders don't get blown over. The feeders can be placed on the ground. If the ground is wet, put it on something waterproof. When you are done with the feeder, bring it inside so it doesn't attract other animals.

Step 4: Don't scare pigeons by sitting at a distance.

You don't need to lose sight of the food if you stay as far back as you can.City and park pigeons are used to people, but wild ones are a little uneasy. You can move closer once they are used to it.Don't feed pigeons while they are getting used to you.The pigeons at the park most likely have been around people for a while. They will come up close to you when you spread food around on a bench.

Step 5: Feed pigeons the same time every day.

Feed them in the morning and evening. They are most likely to be looking for food there. If a pigeon spots food, it may be a little hesitant to approach it.The pigeon will approach the food if you keep placing it there. You can try feeding them from 8:00 to 10:00 AM and from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.Birds can be seen all day long if you live near a city. Many pigeons have adapted to people, but wild ones are still a little scared.Be patient! You are going to draw one in with your feeders.

Step 6: After pigeons are done eating, sweep up the debris.

The shells end up underneath the feeders when you leave birdseed out.To clean them up, use a brush and a dustpan.Use a plastic scraper to remove bird feces from concrete. One US gal of warm water and mopping is all you need to tidy up.If you want to keep rodents out of your yard, you need to eliminate them at least once a week.Pigeons like to eat seeds off the ground, but they may stay away if they have to dig through the hull.

Step 7: The birdbath should be shallow with fresh water.

Use a standing birdbath with wide side ledges for pigeons to stand on.It should be at least 6 ft away from your home.If you can, keep it out of the way of trees or bushes. It should be filled with tap water.Pigeons are more likely to visit places with water.Creeks, streams, ponds and water features are included. It's a good idea to wash out birdbaths 2 to 3 times a week. They can refill with fresh water.

Step 8: You can keep pigeons around by hanging a shelf in your yard.

A pair of pigeons may hatch their eggs. There is a nest in the open that is 7 to 12 feet high. You could hang it from the side of the house. Many types of pigeons nest during the winter, but there are plenty of others that nest at different times of the year.Birds don't like regular birdhouses. They are too large to fit inside. The better choice is if the shelves are open.Unless you are in an area with a lot of bushes, trees, or grass, you won't have to fill the shelf with anything.Grass clippings, twigs, and pine needles can be left out for the birds to use if the material is hard to find.

Step 9: If there isn't any nearby, plant some shrubs, bushes, or trees.

There is a brush pile left out in the open that you could stack branches and twigs into.Pigeons like yards with a few hiding spots because they don't go into areas filled with plants. These spots will be more likely to stay if they are close to food and water. The material from plants nearby can be used to build a nest.Keep your trees and bushes accessible by trimming them.Eliminating tangled branches will make pigeons less interested in visiting those spots.Pigeons are not picky about where they nest, so you don't need a lot of greenery to draw them in.Less is often more with them.
