School buns are a popular Norwegian sweet roll.To enjoy school buns, create a standard sweet dough, mix up a creamy custard topping, and add a dusting of coconut. We will show you how to bake these treats in less than two hours.
Step 1: The flour, sugar, salt, and yeast should be added to the bowl.
If you don't want to mix by hand, put the ingredients in a stand mixer bowl.
Step 2: Put the wet ingredients together.
Pour the milk into a bowl with the melted butter and vanilla after it is microwaved for a short time.In another bowl, lightly beat 2 eggs with a fork until the whites and yolks are just combined.
Step 3: You can use a stand mixer or spatula.
When the dough is smooth and elastic, mix the wet ingredients and eggs in a stand mixer. If you are mixing by hand, mix until the dough is sticky, then use your hands to knead it for 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
Step 4: Put the dough in a bowl and let it rise.
The bowl should be covered with a tea towel.Place the bowl somewhere warm until the dough has doubled in size.On a warm day, you can leave the bowl with the dough on the counter to rise.If your kitchen is cold, put your dough bowl next to a bowl of hot water and cover it with a box or towel. If you want to add a little warmth, put the dough in the microwave oven without turning it on.Rub the paper towel over the bowl with a thin coat of olive oil to grease it.The paper towel will absorb the excess oil.If you want to use the dough later, chill it.
Step 5: In the stand mixer, mix the cream and pudding.
The cream/pudding mixture should be thick. You can use hand-held beaters if you don't have a stand mixer. The custard should be refrigerated until you are ready to use it.
Step 6: The oven should be set to 355F.
Parchment paper is used to line a baking sheet.
Step 7: The dough should be split into 12 pieces.
It will be easier to divide the dough if youKnead it first.Place the portions on the tray. The pieces should be about the size of a lemon. You can cover the tray with a tea towel and leave the dough in a warm place to rise for another 30 minutes.
Step 8: Use a spoon to make small dents in the buns.
The spoon should be pressed lightly into the dough to flatten it.If you fill the divot with enough custard, you don't have to worry about spilling it.
Step 9: Make an egg wash.
When you beat an egg with a fork, break it up and mix it with the yolk. The egg wash should be brushed over the top of the buns with a pastry brush.
Step 10: The timer should be set for 20 minutes.
The buns need to be checked two to three minutes before your timer ends. The buns will be done when they are golden brown, no matter what time of the day it is.
Step 11: You can get powdered sugar or coconut shavings.
If you don't have coconut on hand, choose coconut with the traditional topping and powdered sugar.Dust the buns with your choice of topping.Either use a sifter to shake the powdered sugar over the tops or sprinkle your coconut shavings the way you would sprinkle salt.
