How To Become a Police Officer in New York

A lot of opportunities await those who are qualified for the job in the NYPD.There are many opportunities to become specialists in Aviation, Highway Patrol, Emergency Services, Crime Scene Analysts, Criminal Investigations, Drug Enforcement and more.The application process can be a challenge for some candidates.Before you start the application process, make sure you understand what is required.

Step 1: Make sure you have the qualifications.

You need to be at least 21 years old to get a job.You must reside in the five boroughs of New York City or the surrounding counties of Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam or Orange to be a U.S. citizen.

Step 2: Proof of education is required.

You will need to be able to document at least 60 college credits with a grade point average of 2.0 or 2 years of military service.An official transcript from your college is required.

Step 3: You have to submit a background check.

The NYPD needs to conduct a background check on you.Unexpunged criminal activity can disqualify you.Any felony conviction will disqualifies you as well as any conviction for domestic violence related charges.Dishonorable discharge from the military can disqualify you.

Step 5: The booklet needs to be completed.

10 minutes is a long time to study a photo.You won't be able to take notes.After the photo is taken away, you will be asked questions about the picture.

Step 6: Refer to spatial orientation.

The route that has the shortest distance between two points will be presented to you.

Step 7: Write your comprehension.

You will be asked to answer questions after reading and understanding written passages.You have to use the correct word or phrase when writing.The focus will be on your use of language.

Step 8: Is it possible to demonstrate inductive and deductive reasoning.

You will be given a lot of information and asked to draw conclusions and justify them.eductive questions will involve the elimination of certain forms of information to determine which facts should inform your conclusion.Thective reasoning questions will begin with a conclusion and ask you to assess its validity by looking at the facts that lead to it.You can purchase exam prep kits from a variety of services.

Step 9: The job standard test can be taken.

You will need to perform basic physical activities on the job if you pass this test.The test will take under 4 minutes and 28 seconds.The 6 stations are barriers surmount, a physical restraint simulation, stair climbing, running in pursuit, and victim rescue.You will have to wait 4 months to take the JST again if you fail it.

Step 10: The academy is for people who want to attend.

You will need to attend 26 weeks of academy training, which will include 1,095 hours of training with certified staff.Your academy training will include a wide range of activities including shooting, use of non-lethal force, car and foot pursuit, investigative procedure, conflict resolution, and you will also be subject to in-service training after you graduate from the Academy.For advancement and promotion, some of this training will be mandatory.

Step 11: You can take a general exam.

Your height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, hearing and dental health will be assessed during a general medical exam.

Step 12: You should take a vision test.

A vision score of 20/100 is needed for uncorrected vision.You will be tested for color blindness.You'll be disqualified if you're color blind.

Step 13: Do you want to take a drug test?

You will be disqualified from service if a drug shows up on your screening.If it shows up in your screening, you will be disqualified even if you have legal authorization to use medical marijuana or come from a state where it is legal.You should provide certified medical prescriptions.It's important if you take Ritalin or a prescription opiate.

Step 14: There is a character investigator.

Every candidate undergoes a character investigation.An investigator will contact you to request documents and meet with you for an interview.A poor credit score and a history of civil legal actions are not included in a criminal background check.If the investigator determines that it is detrimental to your ability to perform your job, you could be disqualified.

Step 15: Take the psychological exam.

Step 16: Understand your benefits and salary.

Once you pass the basic requirements, you will be paid during the training period.Unless you get a specialist position, you will start on the standard salary and benefits package.After six months, your salary could go up to $46,288.After 18 months, the salary can go up to $48,173, $53,819, $58,786, and $62,455.NYPD officers may become entitled to an annual pay of 69,005 after five years of service.After 5 and a half years of service, the jump is up to $90,829 annually.Longevity pay, uniform allowance, holiday pay and average night shift differential will be included in your total compensation.Potential overtime hours are not included in these figures.After five years of service, you will receive 27 days of paid vacation a year.You'll get paid sick leave.If you use sick leave too much, you may be reprimanded.You can receive employer-assisted health insurance, an annuity fund, and a deferred compensation plan.After 22 years of service, you can retire at half your annual salary.Upon retirement, you will get a $12,000 Variable Supplement Fund.
