How To Become an Alaska State Trooper

Being an Alaska State Trooper is like being part of an elite law enforcement agency.It will take a long time to become one.You need to meet minimum legal and educational requirements.You will need to travel to Alaska to take a physical fitness test if you are asked to interview.The Public Safety Academy training lasts for 15 weeks and includes a combination of physical fitness and course work.You can join the elite ranks of the Alaska State Troopers if you make it to the 10-month mark.

Step 1: Become a high school graduate.

You have to complete high school before you can enter the academy.You can earn a GED if you dropped out of school before graduating.To graduate from a home school program that is recognized by the state where you earned your degree, you have to present your diplomas.

Step 2: Become a US citizen.

You are set if you are already a US citizen.You must have plans to become a citizen if you are a permanent resident.The Alaska Department of Public Safety wants to know if you intend to take the citizenship exam.You can become a Trooper if you are a resident of the United States.

Step 3: You have to be 21 years old or older.

You have to be at least 21 years old to enter the Academy.You can still apply if you are a few months away from your 21st birthday.

Step 4: Have a valid license.

You have to have a driver's license in the US.It does not have to be an Alaska driver's license.You can't have your license expired if you apply to the academy.

Step 5: You should show that you have followed the law.

Alaska State Troopers are not only police officers, but also public safety officers.There are many disqualifying events related to following the law.You can't have used marijuana in the last year if it's legal in your state.You can not have manufactured, transported, purchased, distributed, or sold controlled substances while you were associated with law enforcement.If you have been convicted of a felony related to domestic violence, you are not eligible to be an Alaska State Trooper.You can not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor.

Step 6: Show that you have been accepted into other police training programs.

You have to show that you have never been let go from other police departments or training academies in order to be accepted into the Academy.You aren't eligible to be a trooper if you were let go during a training academy.You will have your certification revoked by the Alaska State Police Council.It is not possible for you to be disqualified from a background check in the year before you applied to the Academy.

Step 7: Take the exam to be a law enforcement officer.

You can sign up for the Law Enforcement Officer Exam through the Public Safety Testing website.You will receive study materials once you sign up to take the exam.The exam is related to the study materials you receive and will test your knowledge of the laws you'll be expected to uphold.Set a study schedule for yourself once you receive your study materials.Make sure you cover all of the study guide before the exam.There are a few different locations where the exam is offered.You can get in touch with Public Safety Testing through their website.If you arrive 30 minutes early, you can register and get settled before the exam begins.The written exam and physical exam are administered first.You should be able to complete both parts in 6 to 8 hours.On the day of the exam, make sure you bring a government-issued ID with you, as well as the Waiver and Release Agreement that will come in your exam study materials.If you can't get it notarized before the exam, you'll have to wait 10 minutes.You should leave bags and electronic devices in your car for the exam.If you bring clothes to the physical exam, you have about 10 minutes to change them.You can wear those clothes to the exam.Within 2 to 3 business days after the exam, you should get your scores.Every 90 days, you can retest if you fail.

Step 9: The application can be found on the Government jobs website.

You can find careers by state on the website.You can access the application through Alaska's Department of Public Safety website if you type in Alaska.You can find out if applications are being accepted on the website.If you have at least one year of patrol experience and have an active police certification, you are considered a State Trooper.

Step 10: Additional documentation should be submitted.

It takes almost a year for Alaska State Troopers to be hired.They have a very thorough background check process, which requires that you submit documentation beyond your application.You need your birth certificate and court documents to apply.Your high school transcripts will need to be submitted.Even if you didn't earn a degree, you'll need transcripts for all your post-secondary education.A 10-year residential and work history is required.You have to include every single job and residence you have had in the last ten years.You need your discharge papers for every branch of the military in which you served if you are a former military member.You will need your Naturalization papers and a photograph if you are a naturalized citizen.The telephone numbers and addresses of your current and former spouses are required.

Step 11: You can go to Anchorage, Alaska.

The physical fitness exam is the last step in the hiring process.If you are invited to interview, you will have to pay your own way to Alaska and stay for 10 to 12 days.Stay patient as it can take several weeks for you to hear about an interview.

Step 12: Do at least 25 pushups.

A tester will place a wooden block below your sternum when you take the pushup test.Each time you lower yourself, you have to touch the block with your chest.The only place you can rest during the test is in the up position with your arms extended and your back straight.The test is over if you don't move your hands and feet.

Step 13: Take a test.

You will need to perform 27 sit-ups in under a minute.While your knees are bent, your hips must remain on the floor.When your elbow is touching or extending past your knees, you can rest in the up position.

Step 14: You have to run a timed run.

The course is 1.5 miles long, but it can take place on a track, down a sidewalk, or a cross-country trail.You must complete the run in 15 minutes and 12 seconds.

Step 15: You have to complete the Alaska Law Enforcement Training program.

The A.L.E.T. was founded.There is a program for Alaska State Trooper recruits.If you pass the physical fitness exam, you will be invited to join the program.It takes 15 weeks to be physically and mentally intense.

Step 16: The ALET program training and education schedule can be followed.

This includes classroom and practical training from 7:50 am to 5:00 pm on Mondays through Fridays.Law enforcement strategy, legal knowledge, proper procedures, and how to arrest someone are some of the things you'll learn in this program.You will be trained in weapons handling.This usually takes place on the weekend.

Step 17: You should attend the trooper basic course.

You will be notified before graduating from the A.L.E.T. if you are hired as an Alaska State Trooper.There is a program.You need to complete another three-week Trooper Basic Course if you are.This focuses on more specialized training, with legal knowledge and procedures related to the things you might see as a trooper, including how to handle situations in the wilderness.If you aren't hired as an Alaska State Trooper at this point, you will need to go through the entire process again.During the next recruitment cycle, you can do it.In the spring and fall there are two recruitment cycles.

Step 18: Get your first assignment.

One of the three places you will be assigned to is Soldotna.You might not get what you're asked for.You can get some experience in larger cities in each of the three areas.Highway traffic enforcement, rural law enforcement and statewide drug and alcohol enforcement can be included in your assignments.Highway traffic and rural law enforcement are likely to be the first things you start with.
