Many traditional braids are difficult to create with short hair, but there are a few braiding styles that work well with long hair. With enough practice, you can master several cute braids to sport during special occasions or everyday outings, even if you don't have the right style.
Step 1: Go down the center of your hair.
To draw a part down the center of your head, use a comb. The hair should be brushed on either side. This style requires two standard braids along the front sides of your head. The braids should mirror one another in a number of ways. This style is good for short hair if you don't have enough hair to braid it all back.
Step 2: There is a section of hair on the right.
Take 3 inches of hair toward the front of your face, working to the right of the part.If you have short bangs that you want to keep out of the braid, begin the section behind the right end of your bangs. If you want to include long bangs in the braid, split them in half.In the first section, put the right half of your bangs and the left half in the second section.
Step 3: The section should be divided into three parts.
Take the gathered section of hair and divide it into three parts.Make each portion equal in length and width.
Step 4: The portions should be braided together.
The portions should be braided into a standard braid. If you want the braid to point to the back of your ear, direct it.The middle section of hair should be crossed over the left portion. The left portion is now the middle portion. To complete a full braid, cross the right portion over the middle portion.Once the braid reaches your desired length, repeat as many times as necessary.
Step 5: Put the braid in place.
Tie the end of the braid with a small hair elastic, then use a bobby pin the tack the loose end to the unbraided hair at the side of your head.
Step 6: On the left, repeat.
To create an identical braid on the left side of your part, follow the same steps that were used to create the first braid.braid the three parts of the section to the back of your ear.The two braids don't need to be exactly the same, but they should look similar to one another to maintain symmetry.
Step 7: Remove your braids.
If you need to redo your braids, check them out in the mirror. The style is done and ready to show off once they look the way you want them to.
Step 8: Your hair is on the side.
Draw your part on either side of your head with a comb.To keep it smooth, brush the hair on both sides.A partial French braid that drapes down along one side of your head is how you'll create this look.As you form the braid, you'll leave some hair hanging down from beneath it, creating a "waterfall" effect. This style is better for people with short hair who have their head above their shoulders. If you have short hair, you can try to do a waterfall braid on a section of it.
Step 9: Take a section of hair.
Take 2 inches of hair from the back of your face. The hair should be taken from the other side of the body.Your first section of hair will most likely consist of your bangs. If not, draw the section from your hair at the front of your face.
Step 10: You can make a few braids from this section.
If you split the hair into three equal parts, braid them together into one or two full braids.Cross the left portion of hair over the middle portion to form a single braid.
Step 11: New hair should be put into the braid.
You can add new hair to the braid by drawing it from the top of your head.Next to your braid, pick up a section of hair. The braid should be one-third the thickness of the section. The new portion and the current topmost piece will form one large portion. This newly joined portion of hair can be used to create another single braid.
Step 12: Go to the bottom and pick up a new section.
Take a new piece of hair and braid it.You'll use this new section as a substitute for an old section instead of incorporating it into a standard French braid.Pick up the second part from behind the braid.A portion of hair should be one-third the thickness of the braid.Drop the bottom part of the braid and let it hang loose on the side of your head.Use the new bottom portion to create a new braid. The previous part should be left alone.
Step 13: To the desired length, repeat it.
The same technique is used to draw new hair into the braid. The back of your head is where you want to braid the hair. The new hair should be woven into the previous top portion of the braid. The new hair should be woven into the braid instead of the bottom portion.
Step 14: Make sure the braid is secured.
Attach a small elastic hair band to the loose end of the braid. The loose ends should be left on the back of your head.To remove tangles and smooth out frizz, carefully brush the loose hair hanging from beneath your braid.
Step 15: You have a new braid.
You should check your braid in the mirror. The braid is ready to show off if you like it.Don't braid or redo until you have the look you want.
Step 16: Part of the hair.
Use a comb to draw your desired part. This style works with both sides. After defining the part, brush your hair flat on either side. You can make a French braid on either side of the part or on the lower side. The two braids will form the shape of a crown after you secure them together. This style is called an "around the world" braid. This style is best for individuals with short hair that is above their shoulders as it works best with more hair.
Step 17: Pick up some hair.
Take three sections of hair from one side of your body. The sections should be roughly the same in length and width. Each section should be about 5 cm wide.If you have long hair, the front section will include it.
Step 18: The sections have to be braided together.
Take your three sections of hair and braid them into one or two standard braids. All three sections of hair are included in a single full braid. The back portion should be crossed over the middle to create a new middle. To complete the braid, cross the front portion over the new middle.
Step 19: New hair should be put into a braid.
The current braid has two new portions of hair in it.Make a full braid with each new section. The first new section should be from the top of your head.To combine this new section with the current topmost section of your braid, use the newly combined portion. In front of your braid is where the second section should come from.If you combine this section into the current bottom section of the braid, you can create a new braid.
Step 20: Around the top of the head.
Continue braiding on the side of your head. You can draw in all of the hair from beneath your braid. The hair around your ear is important. The most flattering appearance can be achieved by tightly braided hair.
Step 21: The loose ends should be braided down.
Once you reach the center back of your head, braid any loose hair on that side into a standard braid.Use a small hair elastic to tie off the end.
Step 22: On the other side repeat.
The same steps used for your first braid can be used to braid the hair at the other side.Pick up hair on the other side of your body.French braid your hair on the opposite side of your head, leaving no loose-hanging hair in the process.Continue along the lower side.As much of the loose ends as possible be braided into a standard braid, then secured with an elastic hair tie.
Step 23: Put your hands in the ends.
Tuck the hanging ends under the braids to hide them.It can be difficult to tuck in the ends of your braids.Don't pull out the braid and hide the unbraided ends and hair ties as best you can.To hold them in place, you'll probably need to insert a few bobby pins through the tucked ends.
Step 24: The braid should have volume added to it.
Use your fingers or the handle of a rat-tail comb to pick up and loosen the braid.Pull on each braid to give it more strength.Pull hard enough to remove the braid. The braid should be focused on the front and back.Adding volume to the braid will not affect the face shape.
Step 25: Enjoy and adjust.
Make sure to check your halo braid in the mirror. You should be ready to show it off once you're happy with the way it looks. If the top of your head looks flat or slick, it's a good idea to work your hand over the hair several times. It is a good idea to volumize the hair there to make it messy and natural.
Step 26: Before you braid, use hair oil.
If you want to make styling easier, you should use natural hair oil on your hair.Natural oils like Jojoba or coconut should be used.Dirt and dust can be attracted by these oils.To make it easier to braid, use a boar bristle brush to brush the oil into your hair.If you have thick hair, you can skip this step.
Step 27: You should braid your hair in sections.
Divide your hair into sections using a rat-tail comb.To clip your hair, divide it into two sections. It is possible to focus on one section at a time.If you are going to braid each section into simple braids, you can choose between two side braids or a more elaborate design like a top mohawk with braids.
Step 28: Do side braids.
If you know how to do simple braids, this is an easy option for afro-textured hair.Because afro-textured hair can be difficult to work with, many people do small side braids in a row.Start with one section and braid one side of it.Start the braid at the top of your head.A small braid is formed when you collect hair as you braid.Pull the hair so it is not too hard, as you don't want to damage your hair.Once the braid is done, use a pin to secure it.Make another small braid above the one you just created. The braid should start at your hair line and parallel to the first braid.Attach the braid with a pin.Finish with a small braid above the second braid. It should start at your hair line. There should be three braids on one side of your hair.On the other side of your head, repeat these steps. You should braid your hair on either side of your head.If you want to leave the rest of your hair natural, you can use hair oil and your fingers.
Step 29: Try a mohawk.
The more elaborate braided hair style may require a second set of hands or help from a professional who knows how to work with afro-textured hair. You may be able to do this at home if you know how to braid your hair.Put a hair clip in each section of your hair.Right above your ear, unclip the section at the front end of your hair. You will braid a small section of your hair.As you braid upward, pull the hair taunt but not too tight. The braids should be as vertical as possible. When you reach the top of your head, pin the braid and let your hair sit on it.The next section of your hair needs to be braided.Once you reach the top of your head, make the braid vertical and tight.Move from section to section of your hair. The braids should be in line with each other. At the end of the braids, keep the hair on your head. The hair is going to act as a mohawk. You should have a row of braids on each side of your head after you have finished braiding your hair. You can style the mohawk with hair oil and your fingers.
